If this has been a poll before, forgive me, but  1988  is one of the most interesting Best Actress years to me and  not a bad one in terms of quality either.

    Here’s my ranking:

    1.  Glenn

    2.  Jodie

    3.  Meryl

    4.   Weaver

    5.  Griffith

Here’s a link to my  Best Actress profile of the race  that I did 4 years ago  (Once you get to the page, scroll down , you’ll find it. Only thing different from now is that Streep and Foster are switched):  http://oscarfan69.blogspot.com/search?q=Best+Actress+1988&max-results=20&by-date=true

None of the above. The best performance, at least for me, wasn’t nominated that year.

Streep in the greatest performance of her career.

Yup. She gave the best performance of the decade in that one.

    Let’s see…

Glenn is delicious. so worthy of the nomination. The woman acts with her entire being here.

Jodie is transformative. A worthy winner imo, although, she wouldnt have been my choice.

Melanie is adorable, and also transformative. So happy she was nominated!

Sigourney is entirely intense and committed. She certainly deserved to be a double-nominee.

Streep is in a class by herself here.

    “Crikey. How’s yer kidneys?”

This line-up is one of those once in a decade line-ups.

Could we just give an Oscar to all the ladies here?

Staggering lineup. Gotta go with Glenn.

Did Jodie Foster acknowledge Streep’s better-superior performance in A Cry in the Dark later on?

I’d rank the nominees Streep, Foster, Close, Griffith and Weaver (she should have won Supporting this year).

Overall I’d go with Carmen Maura for Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (still Almodovar’s best, to me).

I think I disliked Glenn Close out of the bunch the most (I ranked her 4th). And for the performances, I ranked Melanie Griffith’s last (but I loved her character a lot).

Meryl Streep, by far gave one of the best performances of all time. Easily my winner. It also proves that she should have more Oscars than three.

Sigourney Weaves is iconic and a close runner-up in the race.

Foster is a worthy winner, but only my 3rd in the category. Her film “The Accused” was terrible though.

    One of the strongest years!

And might I add, male or female. It’s a perfectly judged but deceptively straight forward act, when she’s good no one comes close. She is spectacular here.

It’s one of the best line-ups ever in that category. Such an amazing year for actresses. And those who weren’t even nominated that year would have quite easily been nominated in any other year (Sarandon in Bull Durham, Lahti in Running on Empty, etc.). Anyone except Griffith would have made a very worthy winner. And yeah, it’s probably the best Meryl’s ever been. I don’t think she’ll ever be better than that. And I’ve seen almost every performance of hers!

So, since Sasha mentioned it, what do you guys think of Sarandon in Bull Durham? Would she have made a worthy nominee/winner?
