I give this to Meryl based on her incredible characterization, which you can always count on. If the film had been better written and directed, I think a lot more people on this forum would be won over.

Regarding Viola Davis, i think she did a phenomenal job whehter truly lead or supporting. Usually, I side with the emotionally powerful performance so I definitely could see where her supporters are coming from. I really hope that she wins eventually in LEAD.

Side note: I’m team Tilda too.

    My 2011 Best Actress Lineup:

    Meryl Streep, “The Iron Lady”
    Charlize Theron, “Young Adult:
Rooney Mara, “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”
    Yoon Jeong-hee, “Poetry”
    Anna Paquin, “Margaret”
    Kirsten Dunst, “Melancholia”

    My 2011 Supporting Actress Lineup:

    Octavia Spencer, “The Help”
    Viola Davis, “The Help”
    Carey Mulligan, “Shame”
    Jessica Chastain, “Tree of Life”
    Vanessa Redgrave, “Coriolanus”
    Melissa McCarthy, “Bridesmaids”

These would’ve been miles better than the actual generic Oscar nominations.

Davis should have won this easily but voters just couldn’t deny Streep her 3rd Oscar.

I think this Best Actress race will remain controversial for the foreseeable future.

I think this Best Actress race will remain controversial for the foreseeable future.

Call me naive, but don’t understand why? This wasn’t the first time a SAG winner lost to a SAG loser, and it won’t be the last. Streep had won two awards, the Drama Globe and BAFTA, she has not won in three decades, her film was all about her, real person, old makeup, etc. In a close race stuff like that makes a difference. The Help underperformed, missing out on a writing nod it should have had locked.

For example, Arkin beat out SAG winner Murphy, Kidman beat SAG winner Zellweger, so how was this case any different?

So many great female lead performances from 2011, but alas, none of them were nominated.

    Personal ranking:

    1. Davis
    2. Close
    3. Streep
    4. Mara
    5. Williams

    Personal nominees:

    1. Elizabeth Olsen, Martha Marcy May Marlene
    2. Juliette Binoche, Certified Copy
    3. Sareh Bayat, A Separation
    4. Anna Paquin, Margaret
    5. Kirsten Dunst, Melancholia

I still think Michelle Williams would have easily walked out with the Oscar, if there it wasn’t for Meryl.  Let’s see: Young, “babe factor”, Harvey Weinstein, Globe, a bunch of Critics wins, previous nominations, bio pic, she did her own singing, a subtle but engrossing performance. If that role didn’t scream Oscar…

Still, ideally this should have been Kirsten Dunst by a mile.

I can’t wait for the Streep Stans to give me a load of group s-h-i-t.

It could be possible that, nobody gives a crap what you think of Meryl, so I hope you havent been holding your breathe.

My vote goes to Rooney Mara. Haven’t seen Close but the other three I could honestly take or leave. Here is what my ballot would’ve looked like:

    Kirsten Dunst, Melancholia

Rooney Mara, Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

Elizabeth Olsen, Martha Marcy May Marlene (my personal choice)
Tilda Swinton, We Need To Talk About Kevin

    Charlize Theron, Young Adult (runner-up)

Davis (considering that she’s lead) gives a powerful and sentimentally performance, but she’s in a average movie (at best) and her character has 0 development through the movie.

Bitch, please, The Help is probably a better movie than all this year’s Best Picture nominees combined.

    1. Mara
    2. Davis
    3. Williams
    4. Streep
    5. Close

    A better lineup

    1. Mara
    2. Davis
    3. Williams
    4. Swinton (We Need to Talk About Kevin)
    5. Dunst (Melancholia)
