This is a clear win for Lord of the Rings.  It was the most inspired adaptation of the three Tolkien books and the most important, setting the tone and feel for Jackson’s films.  The filmmakers removed key parts of the book to get the narrative started quickly and made the right decisions leaving out the Old Forest and Tom Bombadil.  They absolutely nailed the opening prologue with the Cate Blanchett VO.  Great character development with the relationship between Frodo and Sam over the entire film.  And good balance of exposition, information-driven scenes (at Bag End, the Council of Elrond, crossroads in Moria, Galadriel’s mirror—extremely difficult to get right) and story-driven action scenes.  The climactic Moria sequence is one of the greatest cinematic moments in the films, with Gandalf falling into darkness.  The structure + very good dialogue (Gandalf and Aragorn in particular are exceptionally introduced and executed) + adaptation changes/pacing make this the Best Adapted Screenplay of the year.

GHOST WORLD easily, with IN THE BEDROOM close behind.

    Shrek is third.

    LOTR is fourth.

And last is A Beautiful Mind….another horrible last place winner.
