Spirited Away. Hands down. Pixar doesn’t come close to the depth of Miyazaki’s storytelling, which is so genuine and not forced at all. I’m going to repost something I said about this film a few weeks ago:
|Boy is Spirited Away incredible, how it functions as an Alice in Wonderland story, immersing you into the entire world Miyazaki creates inside the bathhouse. One of the most poignant scenes (and totally not overwrought like a Disney or Pixar movie) I’ve ever seen in an animated film is when San takes the train to the sixth station. It’s almost as if she has to pass through death to rescue her parents and Haku. Joe Hisaishi’s cue “The Sixth Station” is an incredible piano solo—look it up if you enjoy film music. The dragon flight from Zeniba’s house is also an amazing moment.|
Some of my favorite films are up there. Went with Spirited Away, which is simply masterful. Just love the man’s work.
1. Finding Nemo
4. The Incredibles
7. Spirited Away
8. Toy Story 3
9. Wallis and Grommit
10. Happy Feet
Toy Story 3 by the slimmest of margins over Wall-E. 3rd is The Incredibles.
“Toy Story 3” is wonderful, but “Spirited Away” is a work of art.
