Thoughts? I’m going with the 1970s…Tatum O’Neal is my favorite, with Vanessa Redgrave in 2nd and Beatrice Straight in 3rd.
The 70s gave us the wins of Cloris Leachman, Eileen Heckert, Tatum O’Neal, Beatrice Straight, Vanessa Redgrave, Dame Maggie Smith, and Meryl Streep….and a solid win by Lee Grant. The Oscar for Helen Hayes should have gone to….well that category isn’t very strong, maybe Sally Kellerman? And in the case of Ingrid Bergman, hers should have gone to Valentina Cortese (like she said it should have) or to Madeline Kahn as a consolation for losing the year before and for her work (and I think her better) in “Young Frankenstein” the same year.
Really the 1974 Supporting Actress race COULD HAVE BEEN STELLAR!! You have Valentina and Madeline….I saw switch Madeline out for Young Frankenstein, and then you have her two amazing co-stars who were worthy for consideration: Cloris Leachman and Teri Garr. Then you had Diane Keaton in The Godfather Part II, who should have been nominated hands down over Talia Shire. Also, Valerie Perrine should have been in Supporting and could have been a strong contender for the win but since she was able to slip into Lead, I can handle that two give these ladies a chance. My nominees would have been:
Valentina Cortese, Day for Night
Teri Garr, Young Frankenstein
Madeline Kahn, Young Frankenstein
Diane Keaton, The Godfather Part II
Cloris Leachman, Young Frankenstein
