In honor of the Emmys, who do you think was the best host of the last decade?August 23, 2014 at 12:55 am #549062
Jimmy Fallon, followed closely by NPH’s ’09 stint and Conan (though I haven’t seen Ellen’s or Shandling’s). A lot of it can come down to material, though.
Fallon did pretty much everything he needed to do. Coming off of the success of NPH the previous year could have been intimidating, but he really utilized his showmanship to almost naturally expand from that. He got it off to a great start with that “Born to Run” bit, and would not let up. The 24/Lost/Law & Order tribute was a thing of beauty.
NPH’s first job was properly reverent to the television medium, and full of enough spectacle to keep me engaged. Unfortunately, his second time up was just a bore. Nothing that exciting to start things out, and by the time we got to the “Mid-Show Number” and the Choreography routine, I couldn’t really muster up much enthusiasm. Quite a letdown, especially coming off of his fantastic job hosting the Tonys.
Conan was pretty great in his usual offbeat and self-deprecating way. I still go back to that opening video with him interacting with the nominees every so often (seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1q_8QQO70Q ). The bits with him on Lost and South Park are particularly great. Also, there’s the number of him singing the woes of NBC post-Friends, which is actually pretty harsh to watch in hindsight, given his estrangement from the network.
Kimmel had a fun enough opening monologue, and some good bits here or there, but was ultimately just OK.
Jane Lynch was pretty entertaining in 2011, but the show was a bit of a mess around her (Emmy Tones? Not playing the theme music to shows during the nominee clips? What is going on here?).
Seacrest’s lone stint didn’t leave much of an impression on me (at least when compared to the circular shape of the stage, that year).
And then there were the reality show hosts. What a bummer that was. Just completely flat and lacking any sense of fun. At least ABC was able to joke about it during Kimmel’s stint. Also, Tom Bergeron’s interview on the subject is pretty fantastic. It really highlights how audacious the producers were at the time (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKRkdFGAnu4).August 23, 2014 at 9:03 am #549063
Fallon was outstanding and the entire ceremony in 2010 was really something… Hope this year’s is as good. Come on, NBC!August 23, 2014 at 12:59 pm #549064
In the battle of the Jimmys (the two I think did the best), I feel like Kimmel did a little better. Lych was a solid third for me follwed by Ellen though.August 23, 2014 at 1:30 pm #549065
Fallon did. And I think everyone knows who is the worst.August 23, 2014 at 11:19 pm #549066
I’m very interested in who voted for the Reality Hosts as the best. Is Howie Mandel a GoldDerby user?August 24, 2014 at 7:16 am #549067

I was wondering the same thing.
