Meryl Streep, hands down. Especially her crying scene.

lol I suck at this poll thing. This is my first poll post. How do I install buttons??August 11, 2014 at 11:15 pm #548959
Ok fixed. Sorry y’all!
I was very surprised by Julia Roberts, a celebrity whom I never really cared for. She did some very grounded and most effective work here. But MVP was Meryl for me. Chewed scenes she did, in the beginning and during the dinner table scene, but that boot story was just so devastating and she won me over with that alone. She was in peak form right there.
This is an example of a film where it sorely needed a better director, not only for its acting but also for some of the camera work and pacing, and aside from Meryl and Julia, the other characters weren’t involved as much in the story. They were just there and it sucks because the film is superbly cast with wonderful actors like Margo Martindale and Chris Cooper. Such a waste.August 12, 2014 at 4:23 am #548960
I love Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts in this movie, they are great and really deserved the oscar noms!
but I have to pick Julianne Nicholson, literally the first time I saw her is in this movie and my breath is completely taken, a major breakthrough for her. and somehow I still though that she is Jack Nicholson’s daughter -_-August 12, 2014 at 6:39 am #548961
I picked Chris Cooper, because he was just as terrific as always. When he starts choking on the fear of the animal, I laughed so hard, and it was probably the only time I did in the film. I usually like Meryl, but I didn’t really care for her in this. It just seemed like she could have interpreted the character better IMO.

Chris Cooper was the only actor that seemed real and was honest to his character. Everyone else was hamming it up big time.August 12, 2014 at 11:30 am #548963
Julia Roberts easily.August 13, 2014 at 10:25 pm #548964
Bump bump!August 13, 2014 at 11:33 pm #548965
I agree with the points about Chris Cooper. Wonderfully natural work, as is generally true for him. Margo Martindale probably wasn’t that far off, though.
