Joaquin Phoenix was phenominal in “The Master”, it’s such a shame that the Best Actor race wasn’t closer. Nevertheless, I have to pick Daniel Day-Lewis above him… again.

None of the above. Don’t women appear in PTA films?

Julianne Moore – Boogie Nights. By a mile.

Not a single female option given, especially crude when the winner is easily Julianne Moore in Boogie Nights.

From the list, Daniel Day-Lewis. Phoenix and Hoffman tied for second.

It’s still an Oscar nominated performance that many people like. Shoulda been an option. There’s also Moore in Magnolia as well as Boogie Nights. My ranking:

    1. Joaquin Phoenix, The Master
    2. Phillip Seymour Hoffman, The Master
    3. Julianne Moore, Boogie Nights
    4. Tom Cruise, Magnolia
    5. Daniel Day Lewis, There Will Be Blood

It’s been too long since I’ve seen Boogie Nights. Might have to catch up with it for re-evaluation.

    3) Philip Seymour Hoffman, The Master
    4) Julianne Moore, Boogie Nights
    5) Tom Cruise, Magnolia
    6) Philip Baker Hall, Magnolia
    7) Melora Walters, Magnolia
    8) Adam Sandler, Punch-Drunk Love
    9) Burt Reynolds, Boogie Nights
    10) Philip Seymour Hoffman, Magnolia
    11) Mark Wahlberg, Boogie Nights
    12) Philip Baker Hall, Hard Eight
    13) Julianne Moore, Magnolia

    2. Phillip Seymour Hoffman
    3. Julianne Moore
    4. Amy Adams
    5. Daniel Day Lewis

I would give each 5 of these actors Oscars for these performances

Amy Adams’ performance was fine in “The Master”, but was nowhere near as good as it was made out to be. I’m still confused by the nomination.

I prefer Laura Dern in The Master over Adams. And her performance is even more impressive when you consider she had less to work with than Adams.
