I typed up a huge response but then it somehow got deleted so instead I will just post my ranking:

#1-CHICAGO (fun and entertaining, well-directed, but still flawed)
#2-The Pianist (appreciate and respect it, don’t love it)
#3-The Hours (strong ensemble; soild film)
#4-LOTR: TT (not a fan of the genre or the films)
#5-Gangs of New York (boring and one of Scorsese’s weakest efforts)

My favorite film that year was CATCH ME IF YOU CAN, which I think is among Spielberg’s best…and it also is quite possibly one of if not THE biggest film of his career that when you watch it, it doesn’t play or feel like typical Spielberg which is kind of refreshing.

Other two favorites were About Schmidt and Far From Heaven.

#1 – The Hours (It really touched me)
    #2 – Chicago
#3 – Gangs of New York
    #4 – The Pianist
    #5 – LOTR:  TT

I would have thrown in Alexander Payne’s “About Schmidt” over Jackson’s boring sequel and Polanski’s boring comeback (at least “Gangs of New York” had the towering Day-Lewis performance) and agree that “Far from Heaven” should have been nominated as well — probably would have been my #2 choice had it been in the running.

The Hours because it had a great cast a great story and in my opinion was flawless. Also the film is exactly like the book!

The Hours > Chicago > The Pianist >>>> Two Towers >>>>>>>> Gangs of New York

Far from Heaven, Adaptation, Talk to Her, Spirited Away and Catch Me If You Can were all much more deserved of a BP nomination than Gangs.

Guess I’m the lonely “Pianist” supporter here. Absolutely astonished by Adrien Brody’s performance.

    1. LOTR:TTT (worst of the Trilogy but the only one here I’d call amazing)
    2. The Pianist (I probably need to see it again)
    3. GONY (great, but could’ve been better)
    4. Chicago (very good and entertaining, for a musical)
    5. The Hours (Meh.  Great perfomances, better score, intriguing script, but every other aspect was lacking immensly)

Catch Me if You Can was snubbed.  *Sigh* If only City of God was eligible this year.
