Mariah Carey took the Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female for her first #1 smash, “Vision of Love” in 1990. Sinead O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” was a favorite to win by several pundits until her “beef” with The Pope & SNL appearance caused a bunch of controversy. Many felt that she would have been more competitive had none of that occurred, and an Album of the Year nomination would have happened for her critically acclaimed I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got.
While I wouldn’t begrudge Mariah of her only Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female win for her incredible “Vision of Love,” a part of me thinks “Nothing Compares 2 U” was “robbed” of a win or that “Vision of Love” didn’t really have the impact now or then in comparison to “Nothing Compares 2 U.”
Any thoughts?October 4, 2013 at 10:04 pm #545800
In another year Sinead probably would’ve won but Mariah’s vocals on “Vision of Love” are heaven sent.October 4, 2013 at 11:01 pm #545801
Mariah Carey totally deserved her Besr Female Pop Vocal Performance win for “Vision Of Love.” I remember several pundits predicting her win.
SInead O’Connor delivered a stunning vocal on “Nothing Compares 2 U.” She would’ve been runner-up.October 6, 2013 at 5:57 am #545802
Mariah deserved her win. “Vision of Love” truly is a stunning vocal. Sinead definitely had the emotion necessary to pull of “Nothing Compares 2 U” but the the last note of “Vision of Love” alone made it deserving of the win.October 6, 2013 at 6:01 am #545803
Hard to choose from both had the emotion and intensity, however Mariah deserved her win for “Vision of Love”. I was surprised she was only 20 and to be able to pull off those vocalsOctober 6, 2013 at 7:14 pm #545804
There’s a chance Sinead would have won had she not created the controversy on SNL that year. I am a much bigger fan of Sinead’s music overall, always totally comitted to the music and emotion. Carey, however lost her charm in just a few years and totally became someone IMO who delivered techinally great vocals over way less than inspired songs and her emotional performance of the first few years paled in comparison to the remainde of her career.
All that said, I pick Mariah Carey, because like what others said above – it was a stunning vocal performance both emotionally and technically.October 6, 2013 at 9:14 pm #545805
