i still cant believe that grey actually won that year, against the amazing triple noms from the godfather, especially pacino, though whose nom actually, imo, is a total category fraud
so who do you think should win?
I 100% agree with the academy. Joel Grey was perfect. Also I think Cabaret is superior to The Godfather.
This is a case where I definitely feel I should duck for cover but for years, CABARET was my favorite stage musical (still ranks in my top 10) and I adored the character of the Emcee….and especially the chilling work by Joel Grey.
Al Pacino should have been in Lead, where he would’ve contended, if not, actually GET my vote.
Caan and Duvall were both great as was Albert, but for me, Joel Grey took a role that really can be viewed as nothing (and I have seen a few productions where the Emcee is practically a non-entity) and he made it a delicious and dark delight.
The Academy clearly loved CABARET and I honestly think it deserved Best Picture to make 9 Oscars that night.
No shame….Joel Grey’s win is one of the best in this category’s history.
Agreed. Pacino is fantastic and would have gotten my vote had he been in lead, but Grey is out-of-this-world. He becomes something almost frighteningly non-human. One of my favorite wins. Also, I think the Academy got it exactly right by giving Picture to The Godfather and Director to Fosse.
1.Joel Grey, what a wonderful performance!
