Very interesting race.
Brad Pitt won the Globe but was not nominated at SAG.
Ed Harris won the SAG.
In a different eligibility period, Tim Roth won the BAFTA, where none of his competition was even nominated, over the previous year’s Oscar winner Martin Landau.
Kevin Spacey and Ed Harris tied at the inaugural Critics Choice Awards.
Spacey won the Oscar.
The Academy got it right this year.
Spacey was better than Pitt, but he was lead, so I went with Pitt in an amazing performance.
I actually do consider Spacey’s a supporting performance, as he never sets himself up as the central protagonist in the flashbacks (as far as I can remember), so I’ve never felt dissatisfied with his placement here. He gets my vote.
However, Ed Harris isn’t that far off.
It is no contest for me. Kevin Spacey takes it easily, and it helped he was also good in a couple of other films that year, too.
Never a fan of Spacey’s…I might like him on the stage, otherwise he is too much for me and this performance is no exception. Tim Roth gets my vote barely over Brad Pitt & James Cromwell.
