This was a great lineup of nominees in this category in 2001. There were filled with great performances and great actors. It’s hard to choose between these five nominees, but I’m going to choose Ben Kinglsey for Sexy Beast. He was hilarious at times and scary. Who else can do that besides Christoph Waltz and Heath Ledger?

Real toss up between Kingsley and Broadbent. Haven’t seen ‘Iris’ since but remember going with Broadbent at the time so I’m sticking with him for now.

Throw out Hawke and put in Steve Buscemi (Ghost World), and we have one hell of a lineup.

Broadbent gets my vote kind of in a “spread the wealth” scenario as McKellan gets my vote in ’98 and Kingsley gets my vote in ’82….plus it doesn’t hurt that he is wonderful in Iris and also quite the ball of energy in Moulin Rouge the same year….add in that he is a great character actor finally getting his due and that is enough for me to give him a deserved Oscar.

I’m going with Broadbent. McKellen ranks right behind.
