Not the strongest category, this year.

Robbins is pretty satisfying for me, both for his individual work and as a career achievement prize. That said, Peter Sarsgaard was definitely my favorite of the year for his work in Shattered Glass, and Sean Astin should have at least been nominated for Return of the King.

    Personal Nominees:

    1) Peter Sarsgaard, Shattered Glass
    2) Tim Robbins, Mystic River
    3) Sean Astin, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
    4) Albert Finney, Big Fish
    5) Ken Watanabe, The Last Samurai

It’s too bad Ian McKellan or Sean Astin, or even Andy Serkis from LOTR weren’t an option here. From these choices, I would pick Robbins.

I voted for Djimon Hounsou, who gives a beautifully touching performance.  Almost went with del Toro.  Robbins was very good,  I just wasn’t compelled to vote for him over del Toro or Hounsou.  Didn’t consider Baldwin or Watanabe for a second.

Although it’s long, The Last Samurai is worth the watch. Watanabe is impeccable!

Of these five performances, I’ve only seen Benicio Del Toro’s and Tim Robbins’s. Both great performances, but Del Toro blew me away. I think his performance in 21 Grams is even better than his Oscar-winning performance in Traffic.
