My choice is easily J.K. Simmons. He, by far, has the best performance in the category.

The actual best supporting acting performance of the year will win. And that is terrific.

Can we all agree that Robert Duvall is the weakest in this category?

I honestly don’t mean to be a contrarion, but what really is so great about Simmons’ work? He screams and shouts. So did Louis Gossett, Jr., who won for An Officer and a Gentleman. He shows some emotion. So have many other nominees.

The only difference is that, to me, the emotional scenes (where he initially meets Andrew and where he talks about the death of a former student) ring false as they are followed up by more scenes of him shouting. He’s a demon for the sake of being a demon. There is no point for it to be this way – we are not given any backstory, that is.

The final few scenes made me roll my eyes. Andrew’s father sits him down with a lawyer and Andrew refuses to talk. What a p***y. If you tell me, this is irresponsible. It shows kids who are bullied in real life that they shouldn’t stand up for themselves and that there is no hope to get away from one’s situation.

There’s a lot more to the part than just screaming and shouting. And I don’t think the film is showing anyone anything. Part of what makes Whiplash so great is that it doesn’t tell you what to think or how to think. Simmons adds a layer of mystery to the character, something that a lot of actors lack the nuance and ability to do. I think with a lesser actor, it WOULD’VE just been shouting and screaming. Simmons elevates the part in my opinion. I think Edward Norton’s work in Birdman is the best of the nominees, but Simmons is remarkable.

I quite enjoyed “The Judge” and Duvall is amazing in it! I don’t really understand the hate! Ethan Hawke’s performance in “Boyhood” is much worse. And I liked him in “Boyhood”.

    Norton is a revelation!
