Just rewatched Gosford and Bedroom. Still torn. Thoughts?

This should have been Mirren’s Oscar.

This should be Helen Mirrens only oscar. Judi Dench should have gotten it in 2006.

    Anyone but Connelly really.

I remember nothing about her performance other than she ends up wearing a stupid grey wig like Liz Taylor in ‘Giant’.

Smith is probably the most effective but she’s coasting, so would probably go with Tomei. None of these scream Oscar winner to me.

    1 – Tomei
    2 – Smith
    3 – Mirren
    4 – Winslet
    5 – Connelly

Tomei or Mirren would have been solid wins.

I think Iris is Winslet’s first win worthy nomination.

I know people dump on Tomei’s “Vinny” Oscar, but Connelly’s performance was the laziest victory in the last 25 years.  This should have been Mirren’s.

I don’t think many dump on Tomei’s win. It was just a massive surprise at the time. But most like the performance, and she’s certainly proven herself since.

Completely agree with this. It’s my go to example of someone who won an Oscar for doing absolutely nothing.

It’s one thing to disagree with a win because you don’t like the performance or think another nominee was better. This is a win where there is nothing to have an opinion on.

Tomei, with Smith right behind her.

I went with Connelly but was torn between her and Winslet. All worthy nominees though so I can’t complain

Can someone who has voted for Connelly please explain to me what is they like about her performance.

She doesn’t do anything. It’s not her fault, she isn’t given anything to do but if thsi is Oscar worthy then literally anyone who happens to appear in a film and doesn’t suck must be as well.

It’s not a criticism of her, but with so little to work with what makes her performance worthy of such acclaim?

I can tell you why I voted for her. I love that movie and the role is not very flashy but I loved her performance in that movie. She kept it very realistic.
