yes its full of unforgetably mistakes.and most puerile thing was all those admire and love about life is beautiful.I thought a lot but i couldnt find any other year with these numbers of faults.
Best Picture imo shakespear in love is a fine and intertaining movie but saving privaye ryan and thin red line are really great movies.
Best Actor its the worst acting award in history.a spoiled and priceless performance that should have shut out.
Best Actress paltow was fine and deserved a nom but it shaould have gone to blanchett or watson
Best Supporting Actor i just watch a few clips of afflicatin so i cant compeletly judge about this one.but harris and rush were amazing and deserved.rush also were fantastic in elizebeth
Best Supporting Actress i really cant realize why people think dench deserved this.she done almost nothing in her scenes.dench should have won for notes on scandal or even philomena.
Best Original Screenplay this category called original and truman show was a real original script.
Best Adapted Screenplay its not too bad but out of sight was more deserved
Best Visual Effects i dont know how they give this award to what deams may come.
Best foreign language film do you think life is beautiful deserve all those nominations?(even best editing).i think its even not deserve oscar for foreign language film.central station wich won golden globe and bafta should have won this.June 1, 2014 at 9:36 am #548347
It is a travesty that one of my favourite films ever The Truman Show didn’t win anything, but I don’t think it was the worst year ever. Saving Private Ryan and Shakespeare in Love were still pretty good films.June 1, 2014 at 9:43 am #548348
Actually, 2001 was the worst year in my opinion, but this comes very close
I’m not a fan of Saving Private Ryan, and The Thin Red Line was amazing, but flew too much under the radar. The Truman Show was one of the best films of the year, so I am going for that.
Roberto Benigni is the worst winner of any mainstream film awards show ever, and the fact that he won makes my skin crawl – if Foreign Language films can also win acting Oscars, then why only this one? Why not Jean-Louis Trintignant for Il Conformista or Takeshi Kaneshiro for Chungking Express? It was a hammy, cute performance, and it was an awful win. Jim Carrey or Ian McKellen over him any day
Gwyneth Paltrow doesn’t deserve an Oscar while Julianne Moore, Annette Bening, Amy Adams and Glenn Close have none. Like Benigni, it was a hammy performance that I can’t comprehend why the Academy would give her a Best Actress win – she wasn’t overdue, the performance was bad and it was just plain silly. If they needed to give the film an acting win to justify Best Picture, why not Geoffrey Rush, who gave a superior performance?
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
I don’t have tons wrong with Coburn winning, but Geoffrey Rush gave a wonderful performance, and he would have won this in a landslide if Coburn wasn’t so overdue
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
The fact that her contemporaries Maggie Smith and Helen Mirren have won Oscars for grand, flowing performances, and Judi Dench only won because of a little cameo in a silly comedy makes me angry. Judi Dench may not be acting for a long while more, and when is she going to get a Notes on a Scandal/Philomena role again? It needs to happen sometime, but I doubt it will, and when we look back at the fact that Judi left a legacy with only a pity Oscar win, it will be incredibly sad.June 1, 2014 at 10:09 am #548350
no….the worst in my opinion has to be the 17th academy awards. I’m sorry but “Going My Way” winning all those Oscars is a joke.June 1, 2014 at 10:14 am #548351
The show was great. One of my favorite ceremonies for the overall entertainment—the host, the songs (very strong lineup), the moments, the shocks, the Kazan controversy. I only wish the camera had caught Steven Spielberg’s face when BP was announced.June 1, 2014 at 11:52 am #548352
When you look at all of the wins combined, it is a pretty terrible year.
Picture – The Truman Show
Director – Weir
Actor – tie between McKellen and Norton
Actress – Streep
Sup Actor – this is a tough one…either Rush (for Elizabeth, not SIL) or Murray for Rushmore
Sup Actress – either Bates, one of the Beloved girls or Kudrow for TOOS
So many good possibilities.
So many terrible choices made.June 1, 2014 at 12:31 pm #548353
The one ‘criticism’ I may have about Dench’es win was, that she looks about fifty pounds heavier than the actual Queen she is portraying; and portray her she did. I’d be very surprised, if Dench didnt do a heavy course on Liz, because her personality at the time, her crassness, vulgarity, temper and temperament, she nailed. So I dont have any problem with her win. Imo. she’s just as good or better than those she was nominated with.
If voters were looking for an alternative to the perceived heavy favorite it’s no wonder they went with SIL. Seriously.
Btw Paltrow bugs me soooo much. If I had to vote for “dumbest-ass actress and person ontheplanet” she’s right up there. If she were not in SIL, I’d have enjoyed it far more. The timing, Rush, screenplay, Dench, score, etc.June 2, 2014 at 1:26 am #548356
it’s bad, but not necessarily the worstJune 2, 2014 at 10:06 am #548357
Well, it was a Weinstein year. It feels like everytime Weinstein has a great year it’s called the worst or weakest in History. Isn’t it? *lol*
I like SIL. Not love, but like and it was somehow a catnip for the Academy between two major WWII movies.
Of course I’m still bummed The Truman Show was not nominated for either BP or best actor, but… satires over Hollywood (or TV produktions) are hardly frontrunners. It still got in for BD and best screenplay.
But the Academy was simply in love with SIL.
As for Benigni…. I’ve recently seen “Life is beautiful” and I’ve discovered more depth in that performance than I was expecting it. He’s overall playing a clown and that puts people off, but in the last hour you can feel he really tries to do his best to protect his son. What Academy member, male AND female, can resist that?
There may be better performances out there that year, but I understand now why he won and I don’t mind.June 2, 2014 at 8:25 pm #548358
Not the worst Oscars ever by a mile. But my God, Benigni’s lead actor win is truly one of the worst things I’ve ever seen the Academy do in all my time watching and following the Oscars. And I’m fully Team “Shakespeare in Love”! Judi Dench’s win is one of the best supporting actress wins in the modern era in my book.June 2, 2014 at 8:46 pm #548360
Judi Dench’s win is one of the best supporting actress wins in the modern era in my book.
And it has kept them from giving her a Best Actress win.
That doesn’t change my affection for this Oscar win in any way. Not everyone’s going to get a Lead Actress win, and that’s perfectly fine too.
