Based on an earlier poll of favorite female pop winners of the 90s, I am going to focus on male pop winners (1990-1999, elligibility year)

    Who was your favorite winner?

Not the strongest lineup here, but Clapton’s heartfelt song of grief is hard to ignore:

    1. Clapton – Tears In Heaven
    2. Seal – Kiss From a Rose
    3. Sting – If I Ever Lose My Faith In You

I could give a rat’s ass about the rest.

I wish that Boy George defeated Sting for Pop Male for The Crying Game.

And this lineup is why they merged the genders among categories…

“Tears in Heaven” wins by default. Always makes me cry

“If I Ever Lose My Faith In You” by a wide margin.

It is a great record. I would have tempted to vote for it over Whitney in ROTY.

Eric Clapton’s “Tears in Heaven” is one of the most heartbreaking songs of all time

Not a strong set of winners.

    Seal, “Kiss From A Rose”

Not a strong set of winners compared to the female winners, however here are my picks

Seal-“Kiss From a Rose” (beautiful song, well written, romantic without the cheese factor)
Sting-“If I Ever Lose My Faith in You” (Boy George for “The Crying Game”) would have been another great choice
Eric Clapton-“Tears in Heaven” (this one is a tearjerker and heartbreaking)

Best Male Pop Vocal Performance has never produced a strong batch of decade winners. It has always been a slew of bland, middle-of-the-road winners and filler tracks with some incredible songs thrown in somewhere. It’s interesting that the voters always went safe here, but they weren’t afraid to pass up MOR songs with blasty vocals by acts like Whitney Houston, Celine Dion and Mariah Carey for something with a more “cool” or laid-back factor in Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Kinda glad they got rid of that useless category.

Anyway, the only songs that deserve any acknowledgment are the haunting “Kiss From a Ross,” the sad yet brilliant “Tears in Heaven” and the decent enough “If I Ever Lose My Faith In You.”

“Tears in Heaven” and “Kissed By a Rose.” The rest stink.
