    Amazing list.  Though I’d probably have also included “Nashville” as a 1975 runner-up.

    But was Nashville considered a threat to win?

    Before the Oscar nominations were announced, “Nashville” had swept the major critics awards over “Cuckoo’s Nest” (Best Picture from the New York Film Critics, National Board of Review, National Society of Film Critics) and had been nominated for a record 9 Golden Globe awards (a record that stands to this day).

    Although by Oscar night it was clear that “Cuckoo’s Nest” was going to win, “Nashville” remained a big threat, bigger certainly than “Barry Lyndon” was at the time.
