If the four men who were nominated for both SAG and Golden Globe awards for Best Lead Actor (Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mattew McConaughey, Bruce Dern, Tom Hanks), who do you think will be the 5th nominee?

I have thought that REDFORD  is in all along
so the 5th spot for me is actually MCCONAUGHEY
who IMO is vulnerable as well to lose his spot to
Christian Bale. I dont think Phoenix or DiCaprio
or Whitaker or Isaac can make the cut…

Honestly, I think Rob Redford could easily make it in, just based on the pedigree that he’s Robert Freakin’ Redford! But I have the feeling that there’s going to be a big snub in this category.

Joaquin Phoenix will have immense passionate support. Not sure why few to no people on this board are picking up on that.
DiCaprio has huge acclaim for this performance. He could certainly get it.
Bale is a contender if American Hustle is a huge, huge hit with the academy.
Elba has a small glimour of a chance.

The rest are completely out of the race imo.

I hope Leo is in too.  He’s gotten great reviews….and he’s carrying a 3-hour movie, one that’s no epic by any means with a huge ensemble cast or a biopic chronicling someone’s life from childhood.

This is going to be tough.  I’ve seen Bale, Ejiofor, and Hanks.

Dern, Redford, McConaughey are clearly there too.  If Leo gets in….who is missing?  Very tough question.  It may not be Redford.

Thank you! I currently have Phoenix in my #5 spot. While he doesn’t seem to be getting as much support for his performance as he did for The Master (which, unlike Her, did score Critics Choice and Golden Globe nominations for Phoenix), Oscar voters latched on to that despite a SAG snub.

Phoenix strikes me as the type of actor (like Javier Bardem and Marcia Gay Harden) who have strong followings with Oscar voters even if their names don’t always show up at all the important precursor awards.

Her as a film seems to be gaining a lot more post-release buzz than The Master did, and if Her is a hit with Oscar voters, they could be more than happy to take Phoenix along for the ride.

But then again, this is a really crowded race, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see either Bale, Redford, Whitaker, Elba, or Phoenix making the final Oscar ballot.

Phoenix actually does have a Globe nod for Her.

Surprise nominees appear in crowded races all the time. Phoenix has as good a chance as anybody, and more people on this board need to pick up on that.

If he’s nominated, I will laugh at all of the inevitable “what a surprise!” comments here.

If I was personally picking, my top 5 from this list would be: Dern, McConaughey, Ejiofor, Isaac and Redford. I don’t think those 5 will end up nominated, but I think that anything can happen.

Hustle‘s going to be one of the top two contenders for Best Picture. I think the fifth spot goes to Bale. Were I voting I would choose…

    DiCaprio
    Bale
    Ejiofor
    McConaughey
    Hanks

Still need to see Phoenix, Dern, and Isaac.

I don’t think those 4 that are mentioned in the title are locks.

I’m hoping that DiCaprio, Phoenix, and Hanks make it in.
