Every year, a critically lauded film wins the Oscar for best picture, at which point many people suddenly change their minds and condemn the film for achieving such a merit.  Eventually, it becomes the hip and popular opinion to disike such films, simply for winning praise and the award over other films.

I simply wish to know which winner you think recieves the most undeserved hatred.

Rocky is a great film, and one of my favourites.  Even compared to the other films people generally feel were more deserving, I would take Rocky over Taxi Driver or Network any day.

An honorable mention to Crash, which gets far too much undeserved hate. While Brokeback Mountain seems robbed because it was in that frontrunner position, was Brokeback Mountain really that great of a film? At least with Shakespeare in Love vs Saving Private Ryan, the latter has stood the test of time and is currently in IMDB’s Top 40.  On the other hand, Brokeback Mountain has a modest IMDB rating of 7.7, which is bested by Crash‘s 7.9. I also remember that before it won Best Picture, Crash was sitting quite comfortably on the IMDB Top 250, and probably would still be there if it weren’t for the backlash.

I would also like to mention that of the 2001 Best Picture nominees, I prefer A Beautiful Mind the most. I really couldn’t get into Moulin Rouge, and in my opinion, Return of the King was the only Lord of the Rings flick that deserved Best Picture.

Also, I haven’t seen Braveheart, but at #84 on IMDB’s Top 250, it is by far the highest-rated Best Picture nominee of 1995, and Apollo 13‘s rating is an alright 7.5. I feel that a lot of Braveheart‘s current backlash has more to do with Mel Gibson’s personal life, which in my opinion, is a bit unfair. I’m glad the Academy booed Seth MacFarlane for his tasteless, cheap and uninspired jab at Gibson. Everybody screws up, but who really wants to be publicly reminded of it in front of hundreds of millions of people years after the fact?

I understand the admiration people have for “Good Fellas,” but I never considered the “Dances With Wolves” win as shameful as it’s usually posited nowadays.

I honestly don’t know what to vote for here….or maybe I do, but before I say my vote, I’ll comment on some of the others:

I didn’t care for A BEAUTIFUL MIND from the get-go, so obviously I didn’t support its win, and while I liked the other nominees more, I wasn’t very passionate about them.

AMERICAN BEAUTY was treated like the second coming when it came out and while I do like the film, I always feel like it always loses steam  and then bounces back and then loses it. Of those nominees, I always find myself revisitng THE SIXTH SENSE but even that film has its flaws.

AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS would be in contention for my vote as I do think GIANT and FRIENDLY PERSUASION were better and more deserving films.

BRAVEHEART is in the same position as A BEAUTIFUL MIND although I may have actually disliked Braveheart more. The similarity comes in that I am not very passionate about the other nominees, but my vote would’ve gone to SENSE AND SENSIBILITY with BABE close behind.

ROCKY had no business winning. The first time I saw it, I was baffled…..so it is in contention for my vote.

CHARIOTS OF FIRE is the first of three semi-worthy winners on this list. While I would’ve voted for REDS among the nominees, I can’t deny the beauty this movie had so I at least can support the choice.

CHICAGO gets some negative attention but it was very entertaining and, I think, very well made. While it wasn’t the best film of the year, I would still give it my vote over the other nominees as other more deserving films like FAR FROM HEAVEN or CATCH ME IF YOU CAN weren’t nominated.

CRASH isn’t horrible at all, though the first time I saw it, I was kind of like “Meh” then the second time, I actually enjoyed it, and then over time, grew to forget about it. BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN never had the same impact on me as it did on others, but I still would more than likely give it my vote.

DANCES WITH WOLVES also isn’t horrible, but it also wasn’t amazing. I am definitely in the GOODFELLAS was robbed camp.

DRIVING MISS DAISY deserved it in my opinion. It was the only Best Picture nominee that year that would’ve made my personal lineup….and although it wouldn’t get my personal vote, I think it may be the best winner on this list (battling the title with CHARIOTS OF FIRE).

So in the end, my vote will go to ROCKY with a dishonorable mention to AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS.

By the looks of your analysis, I think you may have misunderstood the question. The poll is asking which film you feel gets the most un-deserved backlash, not to be confused with the film most deserving of its backlash.

I’m surprised with all the votes for American Beauty. Great film or not, I didn’t realize it was among the most hated Best Picture winners.

American Beauty. It’s nowhere near as bad as some of the other choices, some of which are unwatchable.

Oh, my apologies for misunderstanding. I glanced at Over-hated and immediately thought I saw Over-rated, but while I can’t change my vote now, I can at least state that DRIVING MISS DAISY would get my vote for the Best Picture that doesn’t deserve its hate.

The year or Crash I watched all films who were nominated. And the one i liked the most was the one it won.
Crash is the most hatred movie and it doesnt deserve it.

Damn, I misread the question thinking you were asking for the worst among these hated BP winners, so I voted for Braveheart. Not necessarily a bad film, but it is the most disappointing BP winner for me. The whole time you are rooting for the guy, and bam! his head gets chopped off.

So I’ll un-vote Braveheart, and vote for Rocky instead. I love that film! I guess it was always a weak BP winner, but didn’t know people hated enough to list it among the worst BP winners. It definitely is not.

And I must in the minority here, but I’m glad the author of the thread didn’t include Shakespeare in Love in his list. IMO it was better than Saving Private Ryan.

Suppose I’ll go with A Beautiful Mind. While I don’t think it should have won, I do enjoy the film quite a bit. Driving Miss Daisy and Rocky are pretty great films in their own right, but I do think that they’re eclipsed in quality by Taxi Driver and Do the Right Thing, respectively.

Should a Part 2 be made, I wouldn’t mind voting for How Green Was My Valley. It certainly didn’t deserve to best Citizen Kane or The Maltese Falcoln, but I’ve seen it once or twice and have come to share an affection for it, particularly for Donald Crisp’s performance.

Since the title of this thread ends in “Part I” and all of the titles are listed alphabetically, only covering letters A-D, I’m assuming that Shakespeare in Love doesn’t get out that easily, and that this is only the first of several polls rrekydoc plans on posting on this topic. I look forward to these potential future instalments!

I think that American Beauty was deserving of Best Picture.
