Over the years American Idol has had some seriously surprising results here and there. I included the ones that shocked me the most in the poll. Share your thoughts below.
I didn’t include any of the 2nd place finishers here since they technically did make it to the end of the show. If I did, I would have put Clay Aiken and Adam Lambert up there.March 23, 2014 at 1:42 pm #547067
I remember my jaw dropping when Melinda Doolittle was voted off. She definitely should have won that season. That was probably the win that made me start turning on American Idol.March 23, 2014 at 1:48 pm #547068
Chris Daughtry and James Durbin could’ve and very well should have won those two years.
UPDATE: I have had this idea when I was out about my day. They should bring back all the semifinalists (Top 24) that didn’t go onto the Top 10 or 12 and put them into a competition. To show how wrong we were on voting those guys out.March 23, 2014 at 3:16 pm #547069
Voted for Melinda, with J-Hud a close second. Daughtry was pretty shocking too. Didn’t watch beyond the David Cook year after Simon left.March 23, 2014 at 3:19 pm #547070
Definitelty Melinda Doolittle. I still remember how horrible that was. Melinda and Lakisha should’ve been in that finale.March 23, 2014 at 3:26 pm #547071
Melinda’s elimination was the moment that Idol started going downhill. It was obvious that Blake Lewis made it into the finale over her because he got the votes of the teenage girls voting with their eyes instead of their ears. All I can say is thank the lord for Jordin Sparks, a deserving winner if it couldn’t have been Melinda.March 23, 2014 at 3:29 pm #547072
Melinda was the rightful winner of her season and probably the best singer in the show’s history, right up there with Fantasia.
Blake Lewis: because God forbid an attractive white person doesn’t make it into the finale.March 23, 2014 at 5:01 pm #547073
Melinda Dolittle, Jennifer Hudson, LaToya London = terrible robbage of great black singers. But I still find Chris Daughtry’s elimination to be the most shocking.March 23, 2014 at 7:54 pm #547074
I think Chris Daughtry and he was also the contestant who was most obviously shocked at their elimation.March 23, 2014 at 8:00 pm #547075
It was Siobhan Magnus time to go when she got eliminated. People had grown tired of her doing the same old thing every week.
Jennifer Hudson and Melinda Doolittle are definitely the most shocking. Melinda was one of the best singers this show has ever had. And Jennifer Hudson…well her success after the show proves why she should have been in that finale.March 24, 2014 at 3:43 am #547076
Chris Daughtry. I remember being in shock.March 24, 2014 at 4:03 am #547077
Only with hindsight does Jennifer Hudson’s seem shocking it wasn’t particularly at the time.
The shock was the bottom 3 that week (JHud, Fantasia, Latoya). Hudson actually going made perfect sense in that context.
Melinda made the Top 3 so her elimination whilst obviously wrong again wasn’t hugely shocking.
Chris Daughtry’s was much more so as not only did he not make the Top 3 he was thought a dead cert for the final.
My Choice is Pia Toscano who came 9th (NINTH!!!) when thought to be in contention to win. I’m guessing she’s getting no votes because no one as watching by then.March 24, 2014 at 6:46 am #547078
I have a theory about Pia getting eliminated. She was the frontrunner and I think people took it for granted and didn’t vote. The judges should have saved the “save” and not have used it on Casey in the top 11 week. He was good but not that good.March 24, 2014 at 10:33 am #547079
I remember fully expecting Elliot Yamin to be eliminated from the Top 4, so when it turned out that he and Taylor were in the Top 2 for that week, I was already surprised. Still, I figured then that McPhee would go before Daughtry.
