Wow. Just did a search, and apparently there are no polls like this already. There were so many great roles that it was impossible to fit them all in one poll, so I divided them into two. This one covers his earlier years.

Travis Bickle is the better character, but Jake LaMotta is the better performance.

This is a no-brainer. His best performance of this period is, by far, his tour-de-force in Raging Bull. It’s one of those performances that every actor should learn from.

This set of performances is why De Niro is one of the greatest ever. I still believe his Jake LaMotta is the greatest performance ever committed to screen.

    Here’s how I’d rank them:
    1. Raging Bull
    2. Taxi Driver
    3. The Godfather Part II
    4. The Deer Hunter
    5. The King of Comedy
    6. Once Upon a Time in America
    7. Mean Streets
    8. The Untouchables
    9. New York, New York
    10. Brazil
