What do you think is Sean Penn’s best performance? I tried to include his most memorable and acclaimed performances. If you think his best performance isn’t listed as one of the options, select “other” and specify what you think is his best work.

I liked only one performance by him and it was his performance in “Dead Man Walking”. I think he’s overrated and a bad actor.

While I was expecting to see strong support for Milk in this poll, I’m surprised that Dead Man Walking is currently in the lead, but I’m glad that it is. In my opinion, it’s the only role he should have won an Oscar for, and it’s a pity that he won Oscars in two other years where I think that different actors were more deserving.

His win for Mystic River in 2003 should have gone to Johnny Depp for Pirates of the Caribbean (in my opinion), and many believe that Bill Murray should have received the Oscar that year for Lost in Translation. I also think that Mickey Rourke should have won in 2008 for The Wrestler instead of Penn in Milk. All of these men’s career pinnacle performances have been historically left Oscar-less in favor of two respectable, but not the best, Penn performances.

I also think that after Dead Man Walking, Penn’s best performance was actually in I Am Sam, but I think Russell Crowe should have won the Oscar that year for A Beautiful Mind. As you can see, there have been a lot of instances where I strongly disagree with the outcome of the Lead Actor race!

I chose MILK, with DEAD MAN WALKING, SWEET AND LOWDOWN and 21 GRAMS just behind.

I also agree that it’s easily Dead Man Walking (but I don’t think Nicolas Cage was losing that year). My second favorite of his? Fast Times at Ridgemont High. A great comedy performance like that shouldn’t be overlooked. His scenes with Ray Walston were amazing.

Dead Man Walking is his best performance along with 21 Grams. He was STELLAR in both Mystic River and Milk and even if I wouldn’t vote for him in 2003 (I prefer Kingsley) and probably 2008 (I just can’t decide between Rourke and him), I can’t complain that Penn (one of the best actors in these days) has 2 Oscars.

For me, it is MILK with 21 Grams, Dead Man Walking, and Fast Times following up.
