The host or hosts of an awards show can make or break the entire event. You can be absolutely spot-on wonderful, like Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were at this year’s Golden Globes or you could be David Letterman at 1994’s Oscars. You could be cutting edge to the point of being considered too rude (Ricky Gervais). Or you could be a nice throwback to the remember when days (Billy Crystal). With Seth Macfarlane hosting this year’s Oscars, it’ll be interesting to see how viewers and the audience respond to his style of comedy. He’ll either be brilliant or a train-wreck, IMO. So before this Sunday’s show, look back at the past ten years and tell us who you think did the best job as host.

I really enjoyed Steve Martin both times, especially when he split duties with Baldwin. Their opening monologue was quite funny. Still, I had to give my vote to Ellen DeGeneres. Her monologue killed. I laugh everytime I see it. She’s always charming, whimsical, and proving that you can funny without being cruel. The moment when she asked Steven Spielberg to take a photo of her and Eastwood is priceless.

For me, the two women that have hosted this show solo always killed it! Whoopi Goldberg, IMO, is one of the all-time best Oscar hosts in history. Ellen DeGeneres also killed when she hosted. I wonder why they never invited Ellen to host again?

Anyway, I hope Whoopi Goldberg comes back to host it again. She has stated on The View that she would only host again if Billy Crystal co-hosted with her. That would be comedy brilliance!!!

I voted for Crystal, but after watching some of these clips of Ellen DeGeneres, I forgot how great she was as host at the Oscars. They should really bring her back.

It’s a win-win situation. If he’s brilliant, he’ll have succeeded at his hosting duties and go down as a great Oscar host. If he’s a train-wreck, he could be in the frontrunner position to win an Oscar in two years.

Looks like Ellen has the consensus vote so far, which pleases me, because I thought she really pulled the show off well, though I ultimately went with Hugh, who really was great at inserting some much-needed energy in the most charismatic fashion possible.

Why didn’t you put Whoopi Goldberg down for 2001? She would’ve instantly got my vote.

I put Hugh down, he was simply on fire that evening and had so much charisma. Ellen was great as well. She needs to come back and host again.

Whoopi was an incredible host.  Loved her, the costumes she would put on, flying into the auditorium, the jokes (anyone remember “Oh, look the Smith family is seated together! Will, Jada, and Maggie Smith”) — her and Billy are the best in recent years.  They knew how to play to the house, how to gauge the audience, and weren’t nervous in front of them; in fact they made everyone relax they were so good.  Don’t understand why when some people make their lists of Best Hosts online Whoopi is sometimes left out for Ellen or Hugh Jackman.  NO COMPARISON!  Go watch the 1999 Shakespeare in Love show: Whoopi had the audience in raptures.  It’s my number one favorite Oscar ceremony, just an all-around crazy night, from Roberto! to the Shakespeare in Love win, Whoopi as the African Queen to Whoopi as a slave girl with a huge diamond ring quoting Gone With the Wind.  She was hilarious–that woman knows comedy.

Of these years, I absolutely adored the 2003 show with Billy Crystal hosting.  Sean Connery opened the show and presented the opening video, with Billy in all the movies.  I particularly enjoyed the Lord of the Rings bits, with Billy as Pippin and Jack Nicholson as Jack behind him.  It was a great show!  Plus it was the best year I ever did predicting the Oscars, going 23 for 24.
