It’s pretty close, but I gotta say:
    1. O’Toole
    2. Phoenix
    3. Neeson
    4. Pacino

So many, but here are the worst offenses (off the top of my head):

    1. O’Toole (Lawrence of Arabia)
    2. Pacino (The Godfather Part II)
    3. Newman (The Hustler)

Peter O’Toole in one of my favorite all-time performances.  This is the stuff dreams are made of.  Any actor out there, established or up-and-coming, should aspire to achieve a performance on the level of Lawrence of Arabia.  This was the role of a lifetime in a directing masterwork that is at the peak of the epic genre.  The difference between this and any other biopic: Peter WAS Lawrence and perfectly captured the enigma of the man, that flamboyant personality, the darkness within.

I would have picked O’Toole, but I have no issue wih Peck’s victory that year. This is a truly outstanding list, making it a REALLY hard choice (even with the temptation to say other for Gary Oldman in Tinker Tailor). I went with Freeman, not because it’s the best performance (which is O’Toole) but becaus it is one of my favourite performances.

I agree that Peck was very much deserving of a win, but I think this thread is just about best unrewarded performance, not neccessarily if their losses were or were not justified.

I’ve decided to rank mine starting with most deserving. This doesn’t
mean that I necessarily disagree with who won the year these men were
nominated, just that I really liked these performances.

    2. Heath Ledger – Brokeback Mountain
    3. Will Smith – The Pursuit of Happyness
    4. James Franco – 127 Hours
    5. Bradley Cooper – Silver Lingings Playbook
    6. Frank Langella – Frost/Nixon
    7. James Earl Jones – The Great White Hope
    8. Al Pacino – The Godfather, Part II
    9. Leonardo DiCaprio – The Wolf of Wall Street
    10. Kevin Costner – Dances with Wolves
    11. John Travolta – Pulp Fiction
    12. Dustin Hoffman – Tootsie
    13. Leonardo DiCaprio – The Aviator
    14. Will Smith – Ali
    15. Morgan Freeman – Driving Miss Daisy
    16. Tom Hanks – Saving Private Ryan
    17. William Hurt – Broadcast News
    18. Robert De Niro – Cape Fear
    19. Laurence Fishburn – What’s Love Got to Do with It
