Here’s how I would rank the AFI top 10.  And no, I don’t hate the lower ranked ones.  I’d just say that I think there are better American films than some of these on the list, and the Sight and Sound may be a better indicator in some respects.

    10. Singin’ in the Rain
    9. Schindler’s List
    8. Gone with the Wind
    7. Casablanca
    6. The Wizard of Oz
    5. Raging Bull
    4. The Godfather
    3. Citizen Kane
    2. Lawrence of Arabia
    1. Vertigo

    Lawrence of Arabia.
Citizen Kane is the best film here when compared to its age and The Godfather is the overall best, but Lawrence of Arabia is my favorite.

    Gone With The Wind
    Casablanca
    Singing In The Rain.

I’d happily never see any of the others ever again. Especially Vertigo which is beyond terrible.

I don’t think it’s disputable that Vertigo should be among the top 10 greatest American films when you have people like Scorsese saying it’s the greatest ever made: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3jioxfD0PU
But I do agree there are some listed here that to have seen once is enough.

I voted for “Citizen Kane”, but I love all the votes for “The Wizard Of Oz”. Both are so perfect.

And saying Vertigo is terrible is nonsense. Somebody get Cher to rehab, she must be on drugs.

Vertigo is pretty awful, I can concur with.

Though my pick would be Gone With the Wind. Absolute perfection, even though it is to damn long. The God Father is wonderful too.

Gone With The Wind is so overrated. Bloated epic with a few inspired moments, but not one of the all-time best.

Vertigo is not my favorite Hitchcock, but it is pretty amazing. The cinematography and score should be enough to merit as deserving of being in this discussion, but it’s also atmospheric and it has some of Alfred’s most adventurous directing. There are not enough fingers to count the memorable shots from Vertigo. It’s a great film.
