I would argue that E.T. is as much a serious drama, if not more, than a mere sci-fi movie. When I think of Spielberg sci-fi, I think of A.I., Close Encounters and Minority Report.
I resent the ‘mere sci-fi’ comment! Sci-Fi/Horror is my favorite genre.. I do agree that E.T is certainly a serious drama. I used to have to fast forward it when it got to the hospital scene when I was a kid! I’d cry too hard..
Never seen ET!
How about a comedy?!
Jurassic 4, 2014
I have to give Spielberg props for A.I. Artificial Intelligence. It’s likely one of the most relentlessly depressing films I’ve ever seen, but it is beautiful, visionary, and a film I think will be looked at one day as a masterpiece. And of course, adapting Brian Aldiss, and with the vision of the late Stanley Kubrick, gives him extra points imo.
Looks as if he’s releasing Robopocalypse, with (maybe) Anne Hathaway and Chris Hemsworth in 2014…hmmm. And (maybe) Ben Whishaw! Drew Goddard shouldnt hurt it at all.
And he’s announced an Indiana Jones 5.
Cant actually pin down a favorite Spielberg film.
