There’s a few quite legendary actresses out there who it amazes me that regardless of a ton of nominations, have only one Oscar (especially when you consider that people like Hilary Swank and Michael Caine have two!).

I just thought it’d be cool to do a poll to see which of the following most deserves to join the 2 Oscars club.

My vote is for Ellen Burstyn, why? Four words… Requiem for a Dream. Best perfomance in a film ever I think!

    Honestly, all of them do.

My answer may be different every day this week but for now, I will give my vote to Vanessa Redgrave.

Are we speaking about now or earlier years? Or both?

I know most people preferred Helen Mirren in Gosford Park, but I still think Maggie Smith stole the show there, so I was glad she won for The Queen.
Shirley MacLaine on the other hand should have won for The Apartment, though Tears of Endearment was a good win, too.

Where’s Kathy Bates as an option?

What’s so surprising that Michael Caine has two Oscars? He’s been nominated for an acting award for five consecutive decades. He’s quite an exceptional actor, though I think some people wrongly believe that because his voice usually retains its accent he is always the same in every film.

    Honestly, all of them do.
That’s my take as well! All eight are excellent actresses. It’s kind of a shame that quite a few of them are not as well known by the public today, since they haven’t had showy lead performances in ages. Sarandon was getting the best roles in the 1990s until she won for Dead Man Walking. Burstyn was in the same position in the early 70s. I thought Spacek would win 2001 and Christie in 2006, since they had done well in precursors. Redgrave and Dench won for supporting roles, though they are obviously much bigger than that implies. Mirren experienced a huge surge in popularity in the 2000s. And MacLaine too has given some great performances. I think though I will go with Julie Christie, who I’ve always responded to. She’s probably the best film actor on the list. I don’t think any of the listed actresses can command the screen on her level, it was astounding how she could captivate an audience. She’s relatively underrated too, with exemplary films and a wide range of performances to her name.

I can’t believe the sheep we have here. All these votes for Dench who’ll likely defeat Streep and everyone else this year for Best Actress. It’ll be her 7th nomination, her 5th in Best Actress, and her last shot at winning in that category.

Ellen Burstyn needs to win again. She sould have won for Requiem, though I can’t begrudge Roberts’ win as I enjoyed the performance a lot more than many here seem to. I would prefer if Burstyn would win for a film a little more easy to stomach than Requiem, though it really doesn’t matter to me as I generally watch any film regardless of its content.

Kathy Bates needs to win again. I don’t think her performance in Misery is as amazing as many here think it is, though it is a pretty great performance, definitely a worthy and deserved win.

Judi Dench needs to win again. It should have been between her and Winslet in 2006. She probably will have a decent chance this year if Philomena is any good.

Sissy Spacek needs Todd Field to make another film like In the Bedroom with her (though that year I would have went with Kidman).

Susan Sarandon is a prime example of a great actress who quickly stopped doing great work after winning an Oscar. Would love to see her do some Oscar-worthy work again.

And finally, I’m surprised she hasn’t been mentioned here yet…

    FRANCES MCDORMAND!

McDormand could easily win another Oscar for a film adaptation of Good People – the play she won a Tony for a couple of years ago. She recently became attached to the HBO miniseries adaptation of Olive Kitteridge, so she may have an Emmy in her future.

It’s a list of actresses that have only won 1 Oscar. Maggie Smith has won twice.

I voted for Dench because her win is the most ridiculous make up award in recent Oscar history.

She deserved to win again for the right reasons (In Best Actress).

I’d love McLaine to win again as well.

Couldn’t agree more. Dench just has that “WOW” factor everytime she appears on screen. I hope she gets that Lead Actress award next year.

Also off this list I would have to go with Spacek. It’s unfortunate that she came incredibly close to winning a second Oscar (Crimes and Bedroom) but was passed over at the last minute.

Since the bulk of McDormand’s nominations are in Sup Actress, are you resistant to her claiming a second Oscar in that category?

In this case, I’d be fine with a supporting win as she has already claimed the lead actress prize already.

If she had not won yet, to be honest, I’m really not sure. Many people either starkly believe that lead is more prestigious than supporting, or starkly believe that they are equal. I’m undecided. Naturally, I feel like a lead win is more prestigious than supporting, but some of the names that have won lead Oscars (Cher, Hanks, Paltrow, Cage, Benigni) when compared to some of the names that have won only supporting Oscars (Blanchett, Caine, Dench, Freeman) makes me think otherwise.
