The Oscar for Best Animated Feature wasn’t introduced until 2001, when Shrek became the inaugural winner of the category.
Which animated feature released in 1988 do you think would have been most likely to win Best Animated Feature had the category existed back then?
The Oscars were in love with Who Framed Roger Rabbit that year. Whether or not it would have been eligible is up for debate. If it would have been nominated, it would have won easily, if it wouldn’t have been nominated, I think The Land Before Time would have won. Unfortunately, I think that Oliver & Company probably would have also been nominated (and if Roger Rabbit got in, Oliver would have been the 3rd nominee), over more deserving films like My Neighbor Totoro or Grave of the Fireflies.
If it was eligible…Who Framed Roger Rabbit
If not…Oliver and Company (it was the first official film in the Second Golden Age of Disney)
I would hope that it would be Totoro, simply because of how amazing it is, but I honestly think that Grave of the Fireflies would have won. It’s considerably more mature than the others, and it would definitely have been looked at as being serious enough.

Actually, The Land Before Time. I don’t think Roger Rabbit would have been eligible.
If it were eligabe: Roger Rabbit
If not: The Land Before Time
