The Oscar for Best Animated Feature wasn’t introduced until 2001, when Shrek became the inaugural winner of the category.
Which animated feature released in 1997 do you think would have been most likely to win Best Animated Feature had the category existed back then?
For me, this all depends on whether or not Princess Mononoke would have been eligible for a nomination in this category in 1997. That year, it was submitted for Best Foreign Language Film, but the English dubbed version wasn’t released until 1999.
Had Princess Mononoke been nominated in 1997, I think it would have won. If it wouldn’t have been nominated, I think Anastasia probably would have been the one to beat, followed closely by Hercules. However, it’s hard to ignore Cats Don’t Dance, which won Best Animated Feature at the Annie Awards over Hercules.
It would be Hercules vs Anastasia with Hercules having the slight edge.
Cats Don’t Dance……….talk about a blast from the past. I remember seeing it in the movies and taped it off of the Disney Channel or Cartoon Network and being obssessed with that movie.
sidenote, I have never seen any of the swan princess movies so I’m guessing they are either really good or are like the land before time series and had one good one and the rest were terrible.
This was a weak year for Animation. I will say Hercules because it’s Disney.
If Mononoke was eligible, it would have taken it. If not, Hercules would absolutely go the distance and win.

Mononoke, but Hercules or Anastasia would have won if it wasn’t in the race.
