Avatar, The Tree of Life and LIfe of Pi are linked for me in some way…

Avatar speaks to me of societies fighting one another with “science” as the central “referee”/instigator.

The Tree of Life speaks to me of growing consciousness.  Not as much of faith as of awareness.

Life of Pi most definitely speaks to me of faith, determination, free will and the miracle to transform oneself and one’s pain and trauma into something beautiful…

Again, a progression of sorts and, quite frankly, the best we’ve had in years.

I hate that The Hurt Locker and The Artist won best picture – especially the latter forgettable Hollywood-romanticizes-itself-again-and-gloats-about-it dreck – and I beg the Academy – BEG it more than I would for another Oscar for Jessica Lange – to not give the upcoming award for Best Picture to either Les Miserables, Lincoln, Argo or Zero Dark Thirty. PLEASE! SIDE NOTE: I’m sort of on the Anne Hathaway bandwagon now so, yes, give her Best Supporting Actress (I’ll be singing her version of that song forever when I’m down and, trust me, that’s often).

We, as an audience – especially those of us who are more basic and primitve when compared to the *achem* elite – need something a little loftier, more spiritual and more galvanizing to meditate upon. Avatar and The Tree of Life both deserved Best Picture.

Get it right and award it to Life of Pi.

Jude agrees and you don’t want to piss her off..

Well, that’s an easy question for me. I hated “Avatar”. It’s a rip off of every better sci-fi, fantasy and action film ever… And “Tree of Life” was a self-important mess… “Life of Pi” was exquisitely made, stunning to watch, and rather emotional… However, I didnt love it either. It was like an art-house religious horror movie, but a well made one that I never want to see again…

    I’d rank them like this:
    1. Life of Pi (grade: B+)
    2. Tree of Lfe: (grade: D+)
    3. Avatar: (grade: D)

There are two other movies this year which as spiritual or talk about the human condition in some way: The Master and Cloud Atlas.

Personally, I find those two to be much better than Avatar or Tree of Life (though the latter’s visuals shall NEVER be topped at least until cinema evolves into a full 3D experience where the characters come out of the screen, and not in that cheesy Cinemax kind of way…).

I haven’t seen Life of Pi yet, though… looks great for sure.

    Avatar – C+
    Tree of Life – A-
    Life of Pi – B

That being said, I loved both The Hurt Locker and The Artist. The former talks about war, and understanding one’s place. The Artist relays changes with the times, but realizing the old and the new are just as good as one another. To me, they’re excellent pictures. They are brilliantly made with excellent ensembles and compelling stories. I approve.

Tree of life should have won best picture and avatar should have won best picture. They both also should have won directing.

But do you feel they were worthy of Best Picture prizes over Avatar and The Tree of Life, which are amongst the select few best films we’ve had in decades.  They not only speak to our times in a wise, visceral way, they’re fun and and exciting and showcase all that Hollywood has to offer and yet… they’re deeply and mercurially spiritual, their magic lying moreso than any other film on audience interpretation and, I want to say, participation..

Life of Pi is so epic, so grand and cosmic and yet so small, intimate and person.  God, how personal it felt! – as if my inner life was ripped from my being (or journals) and set to film and CGI.  Between this film The Ice Storm, Crouching Tiger,  Hiden Dragon and Brokeback Mountain, Ang Lee is inching towards being the best American film director working today.

Tree of Life maybe. To me, The Artist is a film that is charming and smart. It’s very well done. The only films I think might deserve the prize more were Drive, Attack the Block and The Tree of Life. That being said, I really did not appreciate Avatar in its entirety. I thought the visuals were incredible. Probably the best we’ll see in a very long time, and unspeakably gorgeous. However, the writing is so awful, so insipidly cliché that it nearly ruined a visually epochal creation. Also, I thought Stephen Lang put on one of the hammiest performances sci-fi has seen in a while.

Omg. This thread gives me life. I adored Life Of Pi. Thought it was epic in every level. I’m rooting for the film, and I just hope it can get the nominations it deserves. I don’t like THL. And thought Avatar should’ve won. I haven’t watched The Artist (just watched the first 30 minutes and stopped) and haven’t seen Tree of Life yet, but now I’m defenitely gonna go and check it out.
