The Apartment is best choice.I really love SLP & American Beauty but i cant deny DDL & Swank winings.July 16, 2014 at 5:26 am #548637
I think that Network is the indisputable option here. Screenplay, actor and actress are givens, and it should have won Director and Picture over Rocky.
American Beauty was so close, but it really comes down to Swank or Bening. I would personally pick Swank by a hair here, but I would have been fine with either option.July 16, 2014 at 5:43 am #548638
In a perfect world, Begin Again would have a good shot at winning the big five.July 16, 2014 at 5:48 am #548639
I couldn’t possibly give it to Network. Good as Peter Finch was, Robert De Niro created a legendary character. He was Taxi Driver, nearly all of its runtime, and gave one of the most committed and layered performances. I think its Scorsese’s best film, so the fact he wasn’t nominated for BD is just egregious.
Gone With The Wind always seems like it should have won on paper. Clark Gable was the only missing link and considering the huge popularity of the picture it is rather surprising he didn’t win. Casablanca isn’t listed here—I know the leads didn’t win, but that’s one film I can definitively say should have been a big five.July 16, 2014 at 10:19 am #548640
Even though Swank was really good in Boys Don’t Cry, Anette Benning really deserved to win. No they didn’t know Million Dollar Baby was coming but Benning has yet to win an Oscar and that should have been her’sJuly 16, 2014 at 11:22 am #548641
Network or Virginia WoolfJuly 16, 2014 at 11:44 am #548642
Tough choice between American Beauty and Virginia Wolf. Went for the former, but only because I hate Benning´s lose much more than Burton´s (though this one angers me as well).July 16, 2014 at 12:07 pm #548643
Bening was not touching Swanks Oscar in 99.
Whos Affraid of Virginia Woolf by far.July 16, 2014 at 1:38 pm #548644
She wasn´t. She should have (which is not to mean Swank wasnñt deserving).July 16, 2014 at 6:09 pm #548645
THE GRADUATE and WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF?
Hoffman and Bancroft were astonishing….
Pic and Nichols for sure..and a great screenplay.
Taylor and Burton –Burton totally better than Scofield.
Pic and Nichols for sure…and a great adaptation.
I happen to like A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS
but its not in the same league…July 16, 2014 at 6:43 pm #548646
^The Graduate is another good example. The only one I wouldn’t be sure of is Bancroft beating Hepburn. Bancroft was more supporting than lead, where Hepburn had one of the best performances of her career.July 16, 2014 at 11:22 pm #548647
^^ ??? Really, for Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner??July 18, 2014 at 5:16 am #548648
I went with Network, so I came pretty close to choosing American Beauty. Even though Annette Bening would’ve been my personal preference, I find it slightly hard to argue with Swank’s win despite the fact that Bening would go on to still be Oscar-less.
