In 1990, Scorsese directed ANOTHER classic film: Goodfellas. While Goodfellas was a critical, Dances with Wolves was more of a commercial success. So at the Oscars, it was a surprise that DAD won over Goodfellas. So, in your opinion, which should have won?

Dance With Wolves was actually the strong favorite to win, as was Costner for director. Goodfellas was vastly superior.

Goodfellas much better  but DWW was easily the clear favorite on oscar night….
so when marty became overdue, the silly academy awarded him his oscar
for the vastly inferior  THE DEPARTED…

Time has not been kind to DWW. Every year it stands out more and more how much that film was extremely overrated when first showed.

Goodfellas is fantastic. The best use of music of all of Scorsese’s films, and some of the most iconic shots of his career. The long take at the restaurant is better than several director’s entire careers.

Goodfellas is a great movie, much better crafted than Dances with Wolves, but all in all, I’d rather re-watch Dances with Wolves.

Dances With Wolves didn’t even deserve its nomination. It was truly boring and overrated.

GOODFELLAS is a masterpiece and was robbed to put it lightly. Other films that were snubbed that would have made better than nominees than Dances With Wolves: The Grifters, Reversal of Fortune, Misery, Avalon, I Love You to Death, Green Card…and honestly…I even preferred Home Alone and Pretty Woman to Dances With Wolves.

I will probably always champion Dances With Wolves, because of my personal connection to the film. Some of the cast members are my friends, and Kevin Costner is an absolutely amazing, humane man. Also, my heart is very much in line with the themes of this film. Like Avatar, and Cloud Atlas. So emotionally and spiritually, It’s Dances for me.

As for the craft, Goodfellas is spectacular. Scorsese combines all the elements of master film-making with a different type of brutality from the film that won. Looking back, it’s not much of a surprise that it lost, but not from the viewpoint of craftsmanship.

So I’ll probably be the only one defending Wolves. Lol. There are after all, some beautiful moments in the film.

I’ll happily champion “Dances” and its Best Picture win any day. At the same time, I can’t discount the artistry and verve of “Goodfellas.” It’s such an apples vs. oranges proposition to compare the two films…

While technically there’s some stupendous stuff going on in “Goodfellas” and there are obviously flesh-and-blood characters going through dramatic experiences that could never be played subtly, I find the simple, textured character work done by the actors of “Dances” to be much more compelling. And while I’ve always been iffy on the virtues of Costner as a director, he really does lock into the wide-eyed wonder of the unvarnished land and space of his story with evident heart for those elements bleeding through.

I’ve written this elsewhere on the old forums, but this is my personal (subjective) reaction to the two films, and why I tend to lean toward “Dances.” Whenever I watch “Goodfellas,” I feel like a lobster that’s been thrown into a boiling pot of water, whereas with “Dances,” I feel like I’m walking into a warm bath. “Goodfellas” throttles you into submission, “Dances” beckons you to follow, and as Joe Average Audience Member, I suppose that I simply prefer the latter experience to the former.

I thought “Dances with Wolves” was pretentious and boring.  It was the kind of movie Oscars eat up.  I loved “GoodFellas..”  It was perfect.  Maybe my favorite Scorsese film, at least for the entertainment value.

Goodfellas is better in every department, editing, acting, directing and yes even cinematography. Far more innovative camera work that influenced a whole generation of filmmakers in the 90s.

Goodfellas hands down. My theory is that the Academy hated Scorsese because it was jealous of him, so they gave awards to inferior films and directors out of spite. They must have REALLY FUCKING HATED him to give it to such an inferior film.

I think that what people often forget is that Goodfellas had the disadvantage of being nominated against the Godfather Part III, a film in the same genre. While I think that Goodfellas is better than the third Godfather film, many voters who would have voted for Goodfellas might disagree. I generally find that both Dances With Wolves and Goodfellas are great films, so I don’t disagree with the decision.
