There have been many years when we all feast on one great film after another. After last year’s somewhat disappointing roster of so-called “great films” (see The Artist, War Horse, Midnight in Paris, etc.) 2012 has turned out to be one of those banner years in cinema. With titles like Lincoln, Argo, Silver Linings Playbook, Amour, and Beasts of a Southern Wild all leading the way, how does this year stack up against some of the other outstanding years in cinema history?

1974 was far from shabby, but… there simply will never be another 1939 again. No other year comes close.

1939 was indeed the greatest year for film.

However, there was a year that was equally good – 1999.

    • Magnolia
    • Three Kings
    • Fight Club
    • Being John Malkovich
    • American Beauty
    • Office Space
    • The Sixth Sense
    • Eyes Wide Shut

If these are not some of the greatest films ever made, then I’m surprised.

1939 is the year to bow to, but I ended up picking 1967. The Graduate, Bonnie and Clyde, and Cool Hand Luke are all among my favorite films, and I think the Best Actor category of that year was probably the strongest it has ever been (even taking into account that they couldn’t fit in Sidney Poitier for In the Heat of the Night or Robert Blake for In Cold Blood).

All other years wish they could be 1939.

1967 and 1994 were also phenomenal.

Also a shout-out to 2004 – The Aviator, Million Dollar Baby, Sideways, The Incredibles, Finding Neverland and masterpieces like Vera Drake and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

I would argue that Poitier’s performance in Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner was even better than In the Heat of the Night. The scene between him and Roy Glenn is amazing.

You are 30 years older than I am. You and your whole lousy generation believes the way it was for you is the way it’s got to be. And not until your whole generation has lain down and died will the dead weight of you be off our backs! You understand, you’ve got to get off my back!”

Awesomeness, eventhough I don’t particuarly love that film.

I pick 1974 with 1939 & 1994 a close second – those runner up spots do include Gone with the Wind or Forrest Gump, two way overrated films IMO.  Going to have to agree with allaboutoscars on 1962 being an incredible year.  I wouldn’t  say 2012 was very remarkable though…kinda ho hum for me.

I’d also like to add 1939 is usually singled out, but on it’s tail – 1940 & 1941 were pretty amazing as well.
