Meryl without a doubt… she’s such a talented actress. The films with her I’ve seen are:

    It’s Complicated
    Julie & Julia
    Doubt
    Mamma Mia!
    Rendition
    Evening
    The Devil Wears Prada
A Prairie Home Companion: Last Radio Show
    The Hours
    Adaptation
    Death Becomes Her
    Kramer vs. Kramer

The list is missing some strong people like Ingrid Bergman and Liv Ullman….not to mention Jodie Foster and Vanessa Redgrave….or Sissy Spacek….or Anne Bancroft.

Still there are enough amazing women here that makes it hard to choose. While I love Meryl Streep, there are times where I think she can be very inconsistent.

Hepburn, Davis, Blanchett, Winslet, and Smith are all strong but I do think Blanchett and Winslet are that point in their careers yet (though I think Blanchett will be more respected in the future). To be honest, the only one on this list I question is Diane Keaton but even she was good in the Woody Allen movies, her supporting roles in The Godfather triology (esp. Part II) and then the crown jewel of her career, Reds….so even she is a strong actress.

But Meryl does have great work in Kramer vs Kramer, Sophie’s Choice, Silkwood, Out of Africa, A Cry in the Dark, etc…..

Oh heck….she was an icon so Katharine Hepburn. She did win three of her Oscars for the wrong films but in all honesty, she still should have won for Alice Adams, Long Days Journey, and The Lion in Winter….I would have kept her tally at three….but nonetheless, she will get my vote.

Cate Blanchett! Cate Blanchett! Cate Blanchett!! Though I have only seen one Hepburn movie and it was great (The Philadelphia Story). The thing about Meryl Streep, is that she’s an incredibly gifted actress… but her movies are always about showcasing her, and the movies themselves are never great. One exception is “Doubt”.

    Meryl, hands down.

25 steps down the stairs, as my favourite 2nd, shows up Vivien… 🙂

From that list I voted for Meryl, but my own personal list would include Rachel Weisz and Judy Davis; Shirley McLaine too.

I voted Bette Davis, almost went with Meryl Streep – Maggie Smith & Judi Dench got a brief thought.  Had Anne Bancroft or Ellen Burstyn been a choice then one of them would have gotten my vote.
