Not just for this year, but other previous years too. It always bothered me that the hosts get nominated but not the contestants nor the judges got categories. Something’s missing here. Well, if it did exist who would get nominated, and most importantly who would win, do you think?

Isn’t there already an award for best editing?

If it were up to me, variety performers and reality hosts and judges would share a single catch-all category.

Would they be nominated in groups or…?

Anyway, Harry Connick Jr. had the best judging moments from this television season…even if he sort of got worse by the end of the season. Adam Levine and Blake Shelton would definitely get nominated. And Tyra Banks would get my vote (at some point, she should have been nominated for her hosting.) I also like the judges on The Taste.

Y’know, actually, I don’t really like this idea.

The judges category should be comming our way very soon, they’re expanding these categories and this might be the next step. I still don’t understand why they were taken off the program ballot, they should be there too.

Harry Connick Jr might have looked like a real candidate when the auditions began but he certainly got more serious as the season went along, probably because he noticed how awful the group was and how horrible the season was turning out to be. The Voice people would have this award easily, but I would love to see the producers argue which season gets the nomination, Blake/Adam with Christina/CeeLo or with Shakira/Usher. I bet Christina would put it in her contract that it’s either her or nobody.

As for Best Contestant, that would be everybody’s worst nightmare as many nobodies would be Emmy nominees or winners before the likes of Poehler, Graham, Carrell and others. But…Bianca DelRio from RuPaul’s Drag Race was funnier than at least 10 nominees in the comedy field and Tony from Survivor created more drama and gave a much more exciting performance than the whole Downton Abbey cast and they got 5 acting nominations…

I think these categories are quickly expanding, and I would not be shocked if eventually Reality Show Judges and Contestants were allowed to compete. I’d like to see it done with the following categories:

“Outstanding Reality Host or Judge” and “Outstanding Reality TV Performer or Constestant”

I think this would be the easiest way to accomplish this.   I’ve always thought it was unfair that for example  Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn could be nominated for Project Runway, but not judges like Nina Garcia or Michael Coors, or even some of the stand-out contestants, who arguably are just as responsible for the series success/entertainment value as Klum or Gunn.    Another example, is the idiocy that Carson Daly is an Emmy winner for the voice, but the judges on the show cannot compete, when we all know the judges are like, the ONLY reason to watch that show.

(This thread might get moved over to the Reality Shows forum.)

For three or four years, most judges AND hosts were nominated along with their show’s producing team. So Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson (original recipe “American Idol”), Len Goodman, Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli (plus Samantha Harris) for “Dancing with the Stars,” and Gail Simmons for “Top Chef” scored Emmy noms. Then the Academy changed the rules.

I don’t begrudge Jeff Probst winning his three or four Emmys, or Tom Bergeron’s win, because they deserved to be recognized, but really, that’s what the Academy should have been doing all along.

I never thought I’d say this, but I really warmed up to JLo this year on Idol. When she first joined the show, she was gawdawful, but she’s really in her groove now

This year would have been: (just my opinion)
    1)Harry Connick Jr – Idol
    2) Tom Collichio – Top Chef
    3) Padma – Top Chef
    4) Howard Stern – AGT
    5) Alton Brown – The Next Foodnetwork Star

“Outstanding Reality Host or Judge” and “Outstanding Reality TV Performer or Constestant”

The first one, I can see.  However, I don’t see how a reality show contestant who isn’t specifically there to perform – and don’t say, “Pretty much everybody who goes on Survivor or Big Brother is ‘performing'” – should be eligible for an Emmy.  (I wonder if variety/reality show announcers are considered “narrators” for Emmy eligibility.)

Here’s an idea; if most people can’t name a performer by first and last name, then he/she isn’t eligible for an Emmy.  Oh, wait…that disqualifies a large chunk of the acting categories, doesn’t it?  (How long did it take before more people started referring to Michael Richards by his name than “Kramer”?  Do you know the difference between Jenna Elfman, Jenna Fischer, and Jenna Ushkowitz?  To this day, how many people can name anybody who was on Lost by actor name and not character name?)
