Let’s just assume that at this current moment, American Idol had an All-Stars tournament. The standard rules apply, a Top 24 that goes to Top 12 and they get eliminated one-by-one until someone wins.

I think it would have been a four way battle between Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Clay Aiken and Phillip Phillips.

It would be in the final four Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtry, Katherine McPhee, and Kelly Clarkson. Of course we can’t count out Sanjaya 🙂

Sanjaya would be in there just to piss people off, but only in the Top 24.

This wouldn’t happen of course, but my initial thought was to NOT include former winners. I would also take a Best New Artist Grammy approach and eliminate Katherine McPhee (not because of her music, though), Daughtry, Hudson, Aiken, Pickler and others.

I would leave it at people like Melinda Doolittle, the girl who was the third runner up in the awful Lauren/Scotty season, Casey from that season, Pia Toscano, the third black girl in the Jennifer Hudson, Fantasia trio, and people like that. You came close, you were famous during the show…and then you weren’t. I mean, it’s not like bringing winners to all star seasons of Project Runway, Survivor or DWTS, bringing back Kelly Clarkson for this would be ridiculous.

I agree with basically everything BenitoDelicias said above. I think it’d be silly to have past winners like Carrie Underwood or Kelly Clarkson compete, because they now already have well-established and highly successful music careers plus worldwide fame. Same holds true for Fantasia Barrino or past runner-ups Adam Lambert and Chris Daughtry who’ve even landed individual (and in Barrino’s case, multiple) Grammy nods for their work since Idol. I’d also agree that past contestants who’ve gained a reputable amount of TV and/or film exposure like Katharine McPhee and (Oscar and Grammy winner!) Jennifer Hudson should not be allowed to compete. I still think it’s a neat idea, Tyler, but one that could essentially only work on the premise of solely having those contestants compete who haven’t achieved much success or fame since their days on Idol, like past winner Kris Allen who hasn’t put out new music in years, or top runner-ups Crystal Bowersox, Allison Iraheta or Jena Irene who’ve since faded from the spotlight but are still very marketable.

My other idea is to have a sort of redemption season for the singers in the past 15 seasons who were eliminated in the Top 24/Semi-Final rounds (that of course didn’t make a semi-decent name for themselves). I think that a lot of really amazing singers were eliminated in those rounds that deserve to be given a second hearing, and if it means that Norman Gentle will return (primarily just to piss people off) then I’m all for it.

^^^ American Idol: Redemption. Now there’s an idea I could get behind!
