Fox is starting a new singing reality competition called The Four. The gimmick appears to be, the show starts with four singers, and the competition each week consists of having them compete (individually, and not as a group) against new singers, with the “champions” each week returning the following week until there are four eventual winners.
One report says it is an attempt to compete against the return of American Idol, but the audition forms list dates that imply that this will be a summer series, which brings up the question: now that Beat Shazam has been renewed for next season, is this Fox’s way of announcing that they’re not bringing back So You Think You Can Dance?January 6, 2018 at 3:12 pm #1202458127
So much for being a summer show; the first episode has already aired, and the finale will air just before NBC’s Olympics coverage (and American Idol’s restart on ABC) starts.
This show has the same problem that World of Dance did; is anybody really interested in a performance show where the home audience has no say in the matter, especially if a considerable number of people claim that “the wrong act won”? The show also leaves an important piece of information out – how did the four judges decide who would be the first in “the Four” in the first place?January 10, 2018 at 11:02 am #1202463353
I ordered the first episode on demand and 20 minutes in I just stopped watching. Diddy/Puffy/Brother Love/whatever he goes by and Trainer are great but the other two annoy me.January 30, 2018 at 12:02 pm #1202483579
Since there are only two episodes left, I don’t think this is going to affect the current season, although I am under the impression that the eventual winner gets a contract with Walk’s record company.February 8, 2018 at 1:36 pm #1202490213

Update: it appears that Fox is making this a summer series. Between this and the fact that audition information for So You Think You Can Dance? has not been announced yet, it doesn’t look good for SYTYCD, but then again, it wasn’t renewed last year until February 1, and since The Four runs only six episodes, I wouldn’t be surprised if Fox “suggests” that SYTYCD skip the auditions and go to a “bring back past All-Stars” format this year.

According to the press release announcing the premiere date for Season 2, Evvie McKinney is still working on her first single. I am assuming that the others are signed to the same record company, so any releases they may have are on hold until McKinney’s comes out – otherwise, what’s the point of the show if the losers get the winner’s prize before the winner does?
Speaking of which, Sean “Diddy” Combs, DJ Khaled, Meghan Trainor, and (as host) Fergie will be back for season 2 – but Charlie Walk is nowhere to be seen.
