What about this series “glamorized” suicide? The last thing I thought was “wow, I wanna be like Hannah,” but instead thought “wow, I’d really like to help those who need it.”

If people didn’t like this because of what was shown, then well, that’s real life and you’re only pushing the people who need help further away by saying you don’t agree with it.

You feel this way because you’re grown. Your frontal lobe has likely totally developed and you can make competent long-term decision making. This is not true of the show’s target audience who still have malleable, mushy brains and get on Teen Mom saying that they didn’t take birth control because they didn’t want to get fat and who knocked a girl up because unprotected sex just feels so much better. Truth.

Many of these mushy-brained teens teetering on the edge are not looking at Hannah like she failed. “Well she did fail,” is the most common counterargument I see. “She may have gotten the effect she wanted from the tapes, but she’s still dead, she doesn’t get to see it.” But that’s not how everyone is going to interpret this. She DID get what she want, she ruined the lives that ruined hers, she made others suffer because she couldn’t take it. And as a formerly mushy-brained, formerly suicidal former teen THIS WAS EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED, TOO. Viewing suicide as this last way of getting back at those who wronged you, finding some way to let the world know that so-and-so hurt you, that it was so-and-so’s fault, is the exact sort of immature, but commonplace, goal and desire from someone who feels powerless to abuse and bullying. That you have no power to get people to stop abusing you, but you can hope to make them suffer after you’re gone by taking away the one thing you have control over.

I understand this isn’t everyone’s experience. Some people just want to end it to make the pain stop. I get that. But Hannah was successful and victorious after her death. Not that this is “real” “life” which is what you argue. Most people don’t even leave suicide notes because suicide tends to be impulsive and sudden, much less leave a bunch of tapes that any cruel teen would just throw away or break (no impulse control). Yes, suicide is real, but this is like… the most unrealistic way of going about portraying it. Had it been focused on someone like Skye and her issues it would have been more realistic. This is like watching Skins to understand teen drug abuse in England. It’s not real. But there are real consequences. I already vented yesterday about how depicting Hannah’s suicide was unhealthy and wrong on an expert level.

Not to mention that it’s fucked up that the show made sure to depict one effective emotional landline as a completely incompetent boob (school counselor). Like how does that not send the message that your counselors and other viable forms of psychiatric counseling can’t help you! Don’t bother reaching out, don’t talk to an adult who is qualified to help you, they’re just going to blame you and tell you to get over it. What the fuck. Instead have this revenge fantasy that’s going to work. People in real life DO need help. They need other kids to stop being jackasses, but let’s be real, that’s never going to happen no matter how many tweens virtue signal tweets about how 13 Reasons Why taught them to be nice to others (which is worrying in general that we need a TV show to teach us basic human decency but whatever, kids are cruel). But suicidal people need someone to talk to, they need someone developed who can support them and give them professional guidance. Implying that they’re not safe with a counselor was totally irresponsible.

I’m a bit annoyed by these comments to be honest. It’s a TV Show. Dexter was a TV Show. Any CSI shows are TV Shows. Breaking Bad was a TV Show. Murder, She Wrote and all the Poirot films are TV Shows. We have about a millions shows featuring suicide, rape, murder, and all these nasty stuff. So creators should only make shows about rainbows and butterflies? That’s rubbish.

Sorry your show isn’t immune from criticism.

And the difference is that shows like Dexter and Breaking Bad don’t purport to be Important with a capital i vis-a-vis social commentary and change while completely fucking up the delivery of the message it’s supposed to be bringing.

the difference is those shows focus on crime and solving a mystery… and they are not made and advertiser for teenagers … Im not saying those shows didn’t cause some people to maybe commit a crime … but i think this show is not healthy for its intended audience. and just because there is a show on tv doesn’t mean ts content and its intent get to be excused because its not real.

Reading this thread makes me sad, like there’s people sharing very personal information about how they relate to this show in a negative way and that’s just “annoying”, and “extra”?

Well that’s just your opinion of the show’s message as there are plenty of people that support the show and the message it conveys. We just need to all accept that everyone has a different opinion of this show and none of us are going to agree or sway the other to join their side. I enjoyed the show immensely and you didn’t enjoy it at all, it happens.

It’s strange to me that so many of you come to this thread to bash this show that you obviously hate so much. If you don’t like it, go comment on something you enjoy watching and leave those of us that would like to actually discuss aspects of the show in peace. There are so many shows out there, GO SUPPORT THEM!

Also, for each person this show “negatively” affects, it “positively” affects someone as well, remember that.

You know what’s not an opinion? The fact that the show’s producers and writers actively chose to ignore the advice of experts about how their project might have adverse effects on suicidal teenagers.

I’m not the first to bring this up on this thread, but I can’t help but be baffled by how fans of the show choose to ignore adolescent psychology.

But, you know, as long as you enjoyed yourself, that’s what’s important.

You claimed you didn’t understand the negative reaction. I explained it to you. If I wanted to “bash” the show I would say the actors are terrible or the writing is awful or it was garbage that should have never been renewed. Instead I articulated why I and experts found it problematic. Expecting to insulate a forum topic to only positive aspects of the show sort of defeats the purpose of a forum.

THEN DON’T LET YOUR CHILD WATCH THE SHOW!

Also, DO NOT place the blame for a teenager committing suicide on tv show!

Sharing personal information isn’t what is extra. The fact that y’all still talking about this over and over is extra.
