The 1st Annual Philo Awards, named after television inventor Philo Farnsworth, celebrate the best of television as determined by Gold Derby Senior Editor Marcus James Dixon.

Just like the Emmy Awards, the eligility period for the Philo Awards is June 1, 2013 through May 31, 2014 (with notable exceptions for hanging episodes). While many of these categories can be found at the Emmys, the Philos also take into consideration Best Comedy/Drama Episode, Best TV Ensemble and Best New Comedy/Drama Series. And there’s a special honor celebrating shows that premiered 10 years ago: the 2014 Philo Farnsworth Decade Award.

Each week, the field of nominees will get smaller as I eliminate the last-place contenders in each category. At the end of the process, only the winners will remain.

Here are the 2013/2014 nominations for the 1st Annual Philo Awards in all 30 categories.

Great list! I think it’s great that Jonathan Banks and Katlin Olsen both got noms.

Thanks Joe. I’ve wanted to do my own awards show for years and decided that now is finally the right time to get in on the fun.

I heartily approve! Of your awards in general and your nominations specifically for “Talking Bad/Dead,” Khandi Alexander, Charlotte Rampling, Vera Farmiga, Melissa McBride, and Julie White (I might have nominated her, but considered her supporting on “Nurse Jackie”). I didn’t nominate all of those myself, but happy to see them recognized.

Glad to see “Downton Abbey” in your lineup. It fell out of my top category this year even though I still like it a lot. There’s gonna be a big hole next year where “Breaking Bad” was so maybe it’ll bounce back next year.

Thanks Daniel. Some of the those movie/mini categories were tough because I haven’t seen a ton of the nominees and of those I have seen, I don’t think there’s a lot of Emmy-worthy material.

    What?!

I am so angry that Vera Farmiga is eliminated although she is one of the best! However, I do love some of your nominations and eliminations. But, seriously, Vera Farmiga is worse than Kerry Washington and Julianna Margulies (although I AM A HUGE GOOD WIFE FAN!!!)? Please! Vera Farmiga, like Meryl Streep, Katharine Hepburn, Jennifer Lawrence and others (especially Amy Adams), can act in her sleep!

Sorry Reiza, but Farmiga was definitely sixth place for me. Too many other great performances this year. Thanks for commenting!

I’ve never been as blown away by her (or that show) as the consensus, it seems.

Marcus, I really like how you’re presenting these awards.

    Some overall comments so far:
    * I like you’re nominees – and hooray for the acknowledgement of The Walking Dead
    * sad to see Vera Farmiga eliminated so early, but I do agree that it is a strong field
    * sad to see Joanne Froggatt eliminated but with Melissa McBride still in play I can forgive 😉
    * woo for Pedro Pascal still being in – a big Emmy snub IMO

Can’t wait for the next lot of eliminations

Thanks ts1989. Totally agree on The Walking Dead. Oh, and the idea of eliminating nominees came to me a couple weeks ago. I wish the Emmys would do this!

I like this way of announcing the awards! While I respect the Emmys for having all the nominees be theoretically in second place, this is much more exciting! Are you timing it so the final result will be the same day as the Emmys?
