Hi everybody. I’d like to launch the first  annual Television Episode Awards here on GoldDerby. I’m gonna start collect your votes this or next week depending how you reply but for now I’m kinda short of categories. So far I thought of four:

    Drama Episode of the Year
    Comedy Episode of the Year
    Season Finale of the Year
New Shows: Pilot of the Year

Does anybody have any suggestions for additional categories?

The nominees and evetually winners will be determined by all the users here ond GoldDerby. You can start voting for your favorites soon, for now I’d like for you to just suggest additional, interesting categories…

I don’t know if there are enough miniseries being made to warrant a Miniseries Episode category but I agree with Irishmovielover4ever that there should be a general Episode of the Year category (like Program of the Year at the TCA Awards) that would allow miniseries and nonfiction episodes to compete alongside comedy and drama.

    I love this idea!

I agree with the Episode of the Year category. I also agree they may not be enough miniseries (unless we want to commit category fraud and nominate Downton Abbey, The Hour, Sherlock et. al.)

I like this! I wanted something like this for the official awards, kinda like an honorary thing ala the Oscars, but I think his is a nice way to continue the tradition of voting for the best episode of the season. Unless this gets this thread gets uncerimoniously closed, will put in my votes soon!

    Like the Grammys:
Episode of the Year (all episodes)
Dramatic Episode of the Year (Inc. Miniseries, animated, variety)
Comedic Episode of the Year (Inc. Miniseries, animated, variety)
Pilot of the Year (shows that had a pilot, not that went straight to series)

Nice idea. I’d find a way to add directing and writing categories into this. If you didn’t want a lot of separate categories (like Directing in a Comedy Series, Writing in a Comedy Series, etc.), maybe do it like “Best Directing (Comedy or Drama),” etc. I wouldn’t mind the separate categories. This could be a catch-all for the telefilm categories too, but those I think I would separate. Animated shows could fall under Comedy (it’s time to include them in these fields, Emmys!). Variety and/or Reality fields might need their own categories too.

I like your idea, I just think it would be difficult because we would officially have to decide which Miniseries, Animated and Variety Series belongs to either the Drama or Comedy category. I’ll include the Pilot of the Year category, but I’d include the first episode of any series, therefore also those who went straight to series, that’s easier and shows which TV show had the best kick-off.

I think there should be a separate category for pilots because those pilots have to convince a network to pick them up while other series don’t have to prove their worth.

Okay I could work with a separate category. Just for my understanding: Which episodes would be eligible there? The pilot of shows like New Girl or Up All Night of course, but what about pilot episodes of Veep or Homeland? Would they be eligible or not? Maybe you can explain the difference to me?

The Pilot for Homeland would be eligible but Veep would not b/c it went straight to series. Last year, the Boardwalk empire pilot was an actual pilot while Game of Thrones went straight to series.

Okay, thank you for the clarification. Of course I can make a category only for shows who didn’t go straight to series. But do people know which shows went straight to series and which didn’t? Because I don’t know…
