Some thoughts at this early stage…

    – Ensemble in a Comedy Series has become really stale. “30 Rock”, “The Office” and especially “Glee” shouldn’t be nominated.

    – Alec Baldwin shouldn’t submit. After six consecutive wins, I think it’s the gracious and appropriate move. I don’t expect it to happen though.

    – Will PBS submit performers from “Downton Abbey”, “Sherlock” and “Wallander”?

    – Will “Political Animals” be submitted as a miniseries or a drama series?

    – Will “American Horror Story: Asylum” be submitted as a miniseries or a drama series? I can see them staying in drama series if they want to submit the ensemble. It will also be weird to submit in miniseries when the entire “miniseries” doesn’t air in the eligibility period.

For Sigourney Weaver’s sake I hope USA submits the show in drama series categories. In drama category she’s 99.9% locked up for a win. In mini-series she’ll lose to Julianne Moore for sure.

I don’t see the SAG’s snubbing Kyra Sedgwick. It is the only awards show to nominate her throughout the entire run of The Closer, even last year when the Emmy’s and Globes shunned her. Also, with as great of a performance that she’s given this last 6 episodes, she deserves to be there.

Oh how interesting. Maggie Smith hasn’t won a SAG. With Downton Abbey, Exotic Marigold Hotel, and Quartet this year, I feel like they might want to throw her a win here. They snubbed Danes last year and already gave her a win for Temple Grandin. They haven’t nominated Britton. Margulies already has the most wins in the category. And the Lange win proved that they’re willing to award veteran Oscar winners for supporting roles. Plus I’m pretty sure Smith was runner-up last year.

The only returning multiple-time nominees for Comedy Actor are Baldwin and Burrell. They never even nominated Perry for Friends. I can see Baldwin winning yet again; if they passed up the opportunity to make Carell not a 6x loser, I don’t see why they should change their minds now.

Moore is the likely frontrunner for Mini Actress; at the SAGs she’s 0/5 and she has been in 4 Ensemble nominees to boot. But Lange could be a spoiler for either Smith or her. I think Drama makes more sense as the ensemble can get a nom, and Smith only has 1 nom to date so should be more beatable.

Cranston and Hamm may fight it out for the Drama Actor Sag. I’m leaning towards Hamm since they snubbed Cranston once and his show’s only been up for Ensemble once.

I think they’ll want to move Louis-Dreyfus up to the Fey/Mullally ranks to 3x Comedy Actress winners. Maybe Vergara depending on how well Modern Family handles the pregnancy storyline; she’s the multiple-time nominee without a win. But she’s not a comedy vet like JLD.

Mad Men might take back Ensemble, but for the movie category they went for the big sprawling British ensemble for Gosford Park, so Downton Abbey it is. It could also reduce their need to award Smith.

If 30 Rock improves I could see it getting its 2nd Ensemble award, but as it stands I’m predicting MF to tie Seinfeld with 3 wins. It could also reduce their need to award Vergara or possibly Burrell.

    In summary:
Modern Family, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Alec Baldwin
Downton Abbey, Jessica Lange, Julianne Moore, Jon Hamm

Shame about Political Animals being put in movie/mini-series categories. What were they thinking in USA network? Sigourney Weaver can kiss goodbye her awards. Her only prize will be nominations and that’s it. Shame shame shame.

    For
    both Globes and SAG…

Political Animals will be in movie/mini.

Downton Abbey will be in drama.

We have not heard back regarding American Horror Story yet.

    Wow! Thanks for the
news, Boomer! Even though I was kinda expecting it, I am somewhat surprised at
the Political Animals move, but, I suppose that, the longer that USA waits to
decide on renewal of the “limited series,” the more it can play
around with category placement. Please pass along news about The Hour and
Luther (does BBC America even submit here?) as well as The Big C (can it submit
season 3 in comedy and season 4 in movie/mini?), provided Luther 3 and The Big
