Which Oscar winners would be great of they had their own TV shows? I know television is a bit of a sell-out, but some screen actors (eg. Don Cheadle) have moved to television seamlessly. And if they get their own shows, they could make winning an EGOT even easier. And what type of show would suit them?
My pick: Robin Williams stars in a show as himself, similar to Curb Your Enthusiasm, which chronicles the life of Williams bouncing between comedy and drama.August 31, 2012 at 4:39 am #258155
It’s not so much the winner that does the show as it is the person creating it. Geena Davis and Holly Hunter, both Oscar winning actresses who are great at what they do, each had series that were flops and ultimately canceled. And of course Kathy Bates only got two seasons in Harry’s Law yet it was not strongly written but well written enough to not be canceled the way it was.August 31, 2012 at 5:01 am #258156
Renee Zellweger. Headlining a TV show will reignite her career. A 30-minute dramedy on HBO or Showtime sounds like a good fit for her. Maybe Nurse Jackie has a spin-off called Nurse Betty with Renee Zellweger reprising her GG-winning role.August 31, 2012 at 5:54 am #258157
I think none of them needs a TV show. They are movie actresses. They needs a good role in a movie. that’s all.August 31, 2012 at 7:34 am #258158
I woul also like to see Robin in that kind of show, but i would most of all like to see him back on doing good movies.August 31, 2012 at 7:50 am #258159
Charlize Theron. She’s such a great actress and has so much potential, but she hasn’t been fully utilized in the last few films she’s been in. If Claire Danes hadnt taken the role on Homeland, Charlize could’ve been a great alternative. But a role on a different show that is just as meaty would be good for her too.August 31, 2012 at 7:54 am #258160
Octavia Spencer would make a terrific centerpiece for a sitcom. She can say and do outrageous things and you still love her.August 31, 2012 at 7:58 am #258161
Marcia Gay HardenAugust 31, 2012 at 8:26 am #258162
Actually Marcia Gay Harden has done quite a few pilots over the years, mainly in comedy, but they didn’t get picked up.
Octavia Spencer and Gabby Sidibe (still not an Oscar winner) would be fantastic in a sitcom if their roles aren’t stereotypical.August 31, 2012 at 8:35 am #258163
Actually oopschoice, Sidibe is already a regular on The Big C and, well, she’s terrible on it.August 31, 2012 at 9:12 am #258164
Robin Williams has apparently signed on to do a David E Kelley comedy on CBS.August 31, 2012 at 9:22 am #258165
I haven’t watched season 3 yet, but for the first two seasons I think Sidibe has been the best thing about The Big C. She’s capable of carrying her own show.
And it’s too bad that HBO’s The Corrections didn’t get picked up since Chris Cooper and Dianne Wiest were in it.August 31, 2012 at 9:28 am #258166
I’m sure Gabby Sidibe is a great person and all but she’s an awful actress. She does not have any range. She’s very limited and should be happy she’s starring on “The Big C” (even if the show itself is awful).
As for Octavia Spencer. I don’t think she could carry her own show but a nice meaty supporting role would suit her very well.
All in all I agree with Vincelette. Movie actresses deserve good movie roles. Sadly after they’re 40 they’re out. Hollywood is such an awaful place to work in.August 31, 2012 at 10:32 am #258167
I wouldn’t say need, but I’d like to see Susan Sarandon get one.
