Looking over the predicted nominees for Best Supporting Actress in Comedy, I found myself asking; Why wouldn’t Janney submit herself in the lead category? A strong case could be made that she and not Anna Faris is infact the star of the show.

Then I realized we were reliving her “West Wing” strategy. In 2000 and 2001 Janney, won Best Supporting Actress in a Drama and in 2002 promoted herself successfully to the lead category. Looking back it was a smart strategy. In 2001 the Best Actress in a Drama nominees were; Lorraine Bracco, Sela Ward, Amy Brenneman, Marg Helgenberger and winner Edie Falco an argument could be made that the category was somewhat crowded and if Janney had submitted herself in the lead category she might have been snubbed. But, in 2002, only Brenneman would return with the ladies from the Soprano’s taking the year off. Janney and Brenneman were joined by three ladies from new shows; Jennifer Garner, Frances Conroy, & Rachel
    Griffiths.

Lets say for now Julia Louis Dreyfus, Amy Poehler, and Edie Falco will reap nominations for their respective shows only one will be eligible to return leaving a possible two spots open. We don’t know yet what the 2016 race will look like but I’m willing to predict Janney will be promoting herself again after her second win in the Supporting Category. Anyone agree with me?

I always thought that she switched categories so that Stockard Channing could win in supporting, but I could definitely see this happening. I always saw her as a co-lead anyway for Mom.

My assumption was that her promotion to lead was a reflection on her increased airtime and heavier storyline.  As the show went on it became clearer and clearer that CJ was a break-out character and that Janney would be getting increased focus?

When she moved up to lead for The West Wing, she gave other West Wing supporting actresses a chance to get nominated and/or win. But if she does that for Mom, Anna Faris’ already slim chance will be even slimmer, even if it could help Mimi Kennedy quite a bit.

What if in the future she switches to lead and Anna Faris to supporting? Both of them could get in, though it will be a ridiculous category placement.
