Ok so this episode had a lot going on so I’m just going to address the plots in order of my preference. The Andrew stuff was awesome. And so very “American Psycho”.
The Donatella and Gianni scenes were awesome. And that opening was stellar. Oddly enough Ricky and Penelope have amazing chemistry together. Just wish he had more chemistry with edgar. My grade: AJanuary 25, 2018 at 8:12 am #1202478290
HOT DAMN! I am LIVING for Darren Criss in this role. I agree that he has taken a lot of inspiration from Bale’s Patrick Bateman, and his performance is all the better for it. He’s suave, and menacing, and somewhat pathetic. Great casting – hot serial killers are so my thing (a la Dexter, Jamie Dornan in The Fall).
Penelope and Edgar are also delivering strong performances, and while he was never going to blow anyone away with his acting, Ricky should also be commended.
I could do without the time-jumping, and Dascha Polanco; I want her to be better than she is but she does nothing for me. But I am pleased with the tone and pacing thus far. Murphy has achieved the opulent, operatic atmosphere he was aiming for, and Ramirez’s performance of Versace as a tragic hero crippled by beauty, by fame, by sickness, is nuance and affecting.
I wonder if this season will have the impact of last season – people have been talking very positively about these first two episodes.

Judith Light was fantastic. Hopefully FX will try and write an appeal so Judith Light will be eligible for supporting Actress. Light> Cruz. Also, I really wish that anthology series could be eligible for the guest categories.February 1, 2018 at 7:48 am #1202484912
Wasn’t thrilling on this episode to be honest but DC and JL were awesome. My grade: B+February 1, 2018 at 8:38 am #1202484985
Last night’s episode was terrifying. Hard to watch and support/glorify a mass murderer, but Darren Criss is so believable and haunting as Andrew Cunanan.
Although, I don’t think the title “The Assassination of Gianni Versace” fits well. Yes, Versace was the biggest name killed by Cunanan, but this show solely focuses on Criss and his performance of the serial killer.February 2, 2018 at 6:41 pm #1202486244
I think this season is great but of course not as amazing as OJ was… I believe that the Katrina season will rival the OJ one now it has Scott Rudin on board as EP!February 3, 2018 at 7:26 am #1202486464

Me too. I just watched the episode and Judith Light was wonderful. I wish they could make her eligible for Guest Actress in a Drama Series. Maybe they could appeal to make limited series eligible for the guest acting categories. I suggest that maybe the eligibility is for those who only appeared for one episode since there are really times when an actor only appears in one episode of a limited series and ended up being wonderful.February 3, 2018 at 12:04 pm #1202486582
Light was outstanding and it’s a tragedy that she can’t be Emmy nominated. Criss has also succeeded incredibly in actually becoming terrifying to watch. Riveting stuff.February 3, 2018 at 1:21 pm #1202486616

But they can! If they rightfully submit as drama series.February 3, 2018 at 1:32 pm #1202486620
At this point we need to just get rid of limited series and have 4 categories: drama program, comedy program, variety program, and non-fiction/ Docuseries Program.February 3, 2018 at 2:51 pm #1202486643

I would normally agree, but that makes sense now because the Limited Series category is weak. Try doing a category of seven nominees for last year’s Emmys, including shows that were competing for both Drama and Limited Series. In the golden era of TV, maybe the Emmys should have a variable number of nominees like the Oscars.February 8, 2018 at 4:27 am #1202489870
After last week’s lull, this was truly CHILLING. I have a feeling Criss won’t get a nomination, but I’ll be damned if this isn’t the most riveting performance I’ve seen on television in a long while…well, actually, since Nicole Kidman in Big Little Lies.

Also, major shout out to Daniel Minahan – his direction was filmatic and engrossing. Justice would bestow accolades towards him, alas justice is never fully served.
P.S. I NEED MORE (any!) PENELOPE!February 8, 2018 at 5:25 am #1202489895
Well I just finished watching episode 4 and WOW. A+.February 9, 2018 at 3:27 pm #1202490970

I agree, the title doesn’t fit the main narrative of the series. However, ‘The Making of Andrew Cunanan’ or something similar wouldn’t have had the popular appeal that ‘The Assassination of Gianni Versace’.
I’m also not sure why Darren Criss doesn’t have top billing either. If there’s any justice, he will be a strong contender at the Emmys and Globes.
