So I recently started rewatching Breaking Bad, and I am currently on Seven Thirty-Seven. This is the episode with the notorious rape scene, and towards the end there is a very showy scene where Skyler rants about Marie and has a mini meltdown in front of Hank. It would have been a very competitive tape had she been nominated in supporting actress, although that was one of the the years where tapes obviously didn’t matter in that category.

This got me thinking, didn’t Gunn contend as a lead actress until Season 4? She got her long overdue nomination the first time she went supporting. Was it the producers’ decision to push her for lead all those years or was it hers? How many nominations and wins could she have gotten had she gone supporting in the first place?

Notorious rape scene?  Do you mean when Walt didn’t wait for her to take her mask off?  Anyway, I think she was supporting all along and she simply wisened up.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong…..

I believe the only year Gunn went lead was for season 3. That’s the season she had ‘I.F.T.’ as a potential submission. I don’t want to spoil anything if you’re only on season 2 ep 1 but season 3 (in my opinion) is the only season that she arguably could’ve been considered a lead and even then, there are still entire episodes in which she doesn’t appear.

    Enjoy the ride Munster!

That actually might be true.  Breaking Bad’s second season uptick in nominations with Paul and the series nomination were surprises if I remember correctly.  And Paul had a freaking phenomenal season in order to score that nod.

The emmys took a while to warm up on the show, so she wouldn´t have been nominated for season 1 or 2 even if she submitted supporting. Had she gone for supporting in season 3, she definitely would´ve been nominated for the first time.

I think her supporting placement is correct throughout the series. Even if she had seasons where she had a really strong presence, like 3 or 5.2, its still not enough to warrant a lead placement. I mean, I would nominate her in lead actor if she submitted there any day, but she doesn´t necesarilly belong there just because of how relevant she is on the show.

I always thought Edie Falco was a supporting player all through The Sopranos, especially in the earlier seasons, and still think she would’ve won a handful of Emmys regardless of category placement. Just goes to show how powerful she was as an actress, since she managed to win all those Lead Actress gongs. Re Gunn, to me, like Carmella, Skyler was and is always a supporting role, and I do think Gunn would have a couple of Emmys by now had she been in supporting all along.

I thought Falco was much more of a lead in The Sopranos than Gunn was in Breaking Bad.  Besides, in the The Sopranos, outside of Tony, Falco was the closest thing to a second lead whereas in BB Skylar was number three, even four in terms of where she fell on the heirarchy for a good portion of most seasons.

I am currently watching Breaking Bad (Season 2) and she is definitly a lead. I think people think they can get away with going Supporting becasue they aren’t front and center the star of the show. I’ve been knid of thinking about that with someone like Josh Charles for “The Good Wife”. He really has been the lead male for the past 5 seasons but that one is a little more justifiable as a supporting. Anna Gunn is really a lead but obviously going Supporting worked for her.

For me she’s as much as a lead as Robin Wright is in House of Cards. So could go both ways but to be fair they both belong to Supporting.

Season 3 she was definitely a lead in terms of screentime, but yeah, I’m not surprised she was snubbed. Gunn should be in supporting. In both halves of season 5, she didn’t have a ton of screentime but when she did, she was always showcased. She had way more standout moments and was more integral to the plot than Aaron Paul’s Jesse.

Season 3 is the only season Gunn submitted lead. She was never lead even in season three. The first one-third of that season she had quite a bit to do, but it tailed off after that. Paul was the second BB lead. Lead is where he should have been in the first several years.

Robin Wright is also supporting. But she has a big enough name to get away with submitting lead.

Falco’s position was fluid throughout the seasons much like Britton or Moss. Seasons one, four and five she was lead. In seasons three and sixA she was on the fence. In seasons two and sixB she was certainly supporting. She wasn’t always the second most prevalent character. In a couple of seasons that spot belonged to Imperioli. But she did always have at least of couple of episodes where she was the lead character and unlike Gunn or even Moss she always had a clear story line throughout any given season. The only year where it was ridiculous for her to go lead was the final one.

I find it interesting to read the varying opinions about this; i didn’t even realize people thought it was something debatable. To me, Gunn was 100% supporting through the entire series. If she was the secondary lead/deuteragonist I could maybe understand the argument, but she was the third most important character.

Fourth if you include Esposito, Banks, and Norris in their respective seasons.

Gunn could have been competitive for the win in supporting actress for “I.F.T.” Lead placement was a blunder. I’d place her in supporting for the entire run of the series.
