Based on first looks at some of the shows coming next season, do you think there are any competitive new contenders for the 2015 Emmys?

I, personally, have high hopes for the following shows and performers:

Backstorm starring Rainn Wilson and Dennis Haysbert
    Black-ish
starring Anthony Anderson and Laurence Fishburne
    Empire
starring Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson
How to Get Away with Murder starring Viola Davis
The Mysteries of Laura starring Debra Messing
State of Affairs starring Katherine Heigl and Alfre Woodard
Wayward Pines starring Matt Dillon, Melissa Leo and Terrence Howard

There seem to be a lot of promising new shows set to premiere on the big four, but they have lost my faith in recent years, so I will not be predicting any of these shows until they premiere and are well received.

So, that is pretty much a closed deal on Detective Jack Crawford’s fate on Hannibal huh?

Yes – but not necessarily. Fishburne is apparently only a recurring character, and with Hannibal having such short seasons it IS possible for him to do both.

At this point last year, we had high hopes for The Michael J. Fox Show and The Crazy Ones.

I appreciate it, but ABC only started saying that Fishburne was a guest star after people started inquiring if that meant the end of his regular involvement with Hannibal.  But he is still and always has been listed as a series regular in press releases for Black-ish, which he is also executive producing.  And since it is almost always forbidden for actors to be series regulars on two (big four) shows simultaneously, we should probably just take that flashforward that we saw twelve episodes ago of Jack being stabbed in the neck at face value.

Juliette Lewis will be on ABC’s Secrets and Lies and FOX’s Wayward Pines this year.

Ah, I didn’t realize they flip-flopped on it, even though I assumed a knife to the neck was enough.

As far as “contenders”, I’d say sight unseen these are the 5 strongest possibilities:

    1. Viola Davis – How To Get Away With Murder
    2. Octavia Spencer – Red Band Society
    3. Alfred Woodard – State of Affairs
    4. Felicity Huffman – American Crime
    5. Anna Gunn – Gracepoint

This is exactly why I’m waiting until a few episodes have aired to put contender status on a show.

Remember Netflix has that new show with Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. Not certain when it will be on but it looks very promising.

HBO has a couple of shows like Leftovers or the Utopia remake that could become player in the Drama category. Also Netflix has a show created by the Damages guys with Kyle Chandler as the main actor.

Well the one’s I think have potential are:

Viola Davis- How To Get Away with Murder

Felicity Huffman and Timothy Hutton— American Crime

Alfre Woodard— State of Affairs (because she’s Alfre Woodard)

    Ryan Phillipe– Secrets & Lies

    John Mulvaney— Mulvaney (maybe)

Maybe, The Mysteries of Laura if it goes in Comedy, I think it’ll fare better in comedy than drama as it seems light in tone.  And I think Messing is at her best as a comedic actress.

I also think the strongest new shows this upcming season look to be the drama’s as it seems there arent’ as many strong looking comedies premiering..

Does the new American Horror Story count as a “new contender”? If so, I would put Michael Chiklis in the running.

If FOX is really changing the ending of “Gracepoint” from what was seen in “Broadchurch”, then I wouldn’t feel as good about Anna Gunn’s chances.  The character in “Broadchurch” was definitely a strong one, but by far Olivia Coleman’s best episode was the final one.  If the ending is different I can’t see how that character can get that kind of emotional conclusion.
