Janney and Davis are the sole nominees of their show. If you listen to the voters, and they will popularly choose the winners, they really shouldn’t be winning.

Anna Chulmsky could ride the Veep train and Kate Mccinnon could have a Ghostbusters effect?

Davis will be up against 2 women from Best Drama Series nominees (Robin Wright and Keri Russell, Danes too but I don’t see her as a threat) and Golden Globe winner Henson. The narrative for her to win is not strong as last year and the show is not a huge academy or critical favorite.

With Uzo out I fear they may not be able to resist a goodbye kiss to the Dowager Countess! Lena seems to be a threat due to the GOT love and she is now due but will her co stars siphon precious votes in a popular vote? The critics would say Constance Zimmer or Maura Tierney deserves this. I’d be happy with Lena, Constance, or Maura. Please GOD not Maggie.

JLD seems to be a lock but a reminder to voters no black actress has won this category besides Isabel Sanford in 1981. Isn’t it TIME for another one and Traci Ross is deserving.

Right now, I’m actually thinking McKinnon and (sigh) Smith.

While not a complete lock, as any race can surprise, Davis was up against 3 nominees, who’s shows had Drama series nominations last year, and she still whooped their asses. This year, she has even stronger submissions than the one which won her the emmy, she will have a movie out during voting, which is sure to do quite well at the box office, so she will be on the campaign trail, and quite “visible”. The amount of nominations clearly doesn’t dictate winners often. If that’s the case, there would be far less perennial nominees and more winners because their shows have received a boatload of nominations……..

I don’t get your logic. This isn’t the popular vote of the Oscars. Only actors will vote for acting here and the overall popularity of the shows doesn’t really matter that much. After all, both Viola and Allison won under the same system last year. Janney could win a third Emmy for the show and it wasn’t nominated in any other acting category last year either.

The important thing is that both Janney and Davis are popular actors, even though Davis could put off a lot of people with her aggressive campaigning.

Wait, what is this thread about? Is it drama lead actress? Or is it drama supporting actress? Comedy supporting actress? The new voting system? Lack of narrative? Ghostbusters? You do you, @montana82.

Going with Maggie Smith. It was bad enough when I thought that it would be Lena Headey and Emilia Clarke versus Uzo Aduba. But even more votes are going to be split with Maisie Williams and the Emmys actually like Downton Abbey unlike Orange is the New Black. With Uzo Aduba out the year after she won, we know now that there is a disconnect between the nominations phase and the winners phase. Allison Janney is in the same boat. Nobody watches Mom, so Janney barely gets in, but then when voters see her name on the final ballot, they go, “oh yeah, I like her” and may not watch any of the other nominated nominees anyway since we are in an age of niche comedies now.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus is locked with nobody else within the realm of possibility.

    On the drama side…
-Maggie Smith will unfortunately win as a Downton Abbey farewell present.

-Uzo Aduba didn’t have any great material/episodes in Season THREE (remember this isn’t the latest season), I’m not surprised she didn’t get the nomination. But it’s always weird to see a winner get snubbed the very next year, especially a 2-time consecutive winner (in different categories, no less) like Aduba.

-YES YES YES @ Maura Tierney and Constance Zimmer for The Affair and UnREAL respectively. What I once thought were pipe-dreams for these phenomenal actresses has become a full-blown reality!!!

-Sigh @ all the Game of Thrones love. Taking up all the air in the room. Ugh.

    On the comedy side…
-Anna Chlumsky didn’t really have great material this year, and TBH I can’t even recall a specific standout episode for her.

-Niecy Nash – the Emmys love her! She 100% deserved a farewell nod for Getting On…man I miss that show.

-Gaby Hoffman and Judith Light fully deserve their Transparent nods.

-Sad about the Jane Krakowski snub – she had even better material in UKS Season 2.

Cut the crap. Maggie Smith deserves this. People are against her unseen and because of the fact she’s not showing up to kiss some American asses. That’s all. I mean she had a wonderful season, with many good tapes, she’s worthy just as much as the overrated Game of Thrones women.

I strongly believe Maggie Smith is winning supporting. If they hadn’t nominated three GoT ladies, Lena Headey would have been a slam dunk. This way, there will be a vote split between the three and this will result in a third win for Smith, deservedly so.

    Julia is unbeatable.

Janney is vulnerable. I am hoping for a Kate McKinnon upset, but I would be pleased if Judith Light won, as well. Anna Chlumsky didn’t have much to do this season.

I believe Viola will lose. The Academy obviously has tremendous respect for the House of Cards cast and I think it will lead to a win for Robin Wright.

Janney isn’t vulnerable. Every year some new nonsense is thrown around here about “Mom” not being popular or seen (not relevant; getting in as a single nominee due to her name is debatable, but seeing her actual work removes all doubts). This woman has won with panels and popular vote for the SAME role! That clearly means something. She’s breaking Cloris’s record sooner or later. Keep doubting La Janney at your peril.

Julia is probably unbeatable but I do find it amusing people complain about lack of diversity, than Traci Rossi becomes the first Black actress in 30 years to be nominated in this category and she is basically dismissed because a white woman needs her 8th Emmy.

Anyone of the nominees can win Drama Lead Actress except Claire Danes. It’s wide open this year tbh.

Robin Wright is never winning. It’s the same thing every year.

If tapes still mattered I’d agree with you.

People to stop counting out Claire Danes. If Viola wasn’t around Claire would win.

I don’t think Danes would win sans Davis. She’s not the new thing anymore. This wasn’t a terribly buzzed about season. And if tapes still mattered the slightest bit Russell and Maslany would probably make more of an impression there.
