Movies are easy. You either like them or you don’t. Television is a beast. You either watch the Pilot episode and it does nothing for you so you leave it, or it’s an instant winner with you and you have a new favorite show. There are occasions though where the Pilot episode of a show just doesn’t do it justice but the show gets its creative juices going and turns into gold.
So what are shows you may have hated (or just disliked – hate’s such a strong word)) the Pilot for but either stuck through or were told to give it another chance and they eventually turned into staples in your TV viewing life?
Two big ones for me:
“30 Rock” – I found the Pilot to be pretty average and the humor didn’t land for me the way I expected. I had actually called it after viewing it and didn’t pick up the show again until after the first season and was told it was just too good to not watch. I bought it, binged it, and never looked back.
“Game of Thrones” – I really didn’t get hooked until episode 9 of the first season, but I didn’t watch it until the entire first season had wrapped. I’d heard so much about it and tried the Pilot but it was ‘meh’ to me. Now, I want it to win all the Emmys every year.
On the flip side, Pilots I thought were excellent and hooked me right away:
“Buffy, the Vampire Slayer”
“Jane the Virgin”
“Breaking Bad”November 12, 2015 at 1:35 pm #364916
I remember not liking the Parks and Rec pilot, but went on to love the show.November 12, 2015 at 2:33 pm #364917
Bojack Horseman is a recent one where the first episode doesn’t really set up accurately the show that is to come.November 12, 2015 at 2:38 pm #364918
Parks and Recreation – not just the pilot, but the entire first season was meh.November 12, 2015 at 4:55 pm #364919
I didn’t care for the first episode of The Legend of Korra when I saw it the first time. But on rewatch I’ve grown to like it. Love the show as a whole.November 12, 2015 at 4:58 pm #364920

Agree with you.November 12, 2015 at 6:24 pm #364921
Yeah I watched Parks and Rec that first season when it aired and could not hang on. I think it was the summer between Season 4-5 and fell in love with itNovember 12, 2015 at 6:38 pm #364922
Parks and Rec, 30 Rock, Bojack Horseman, Seinfeld, The Wire, Deadwood, Carnivale, Happy Endings. Most modern comedies, really.November 12, 2015 at 8:10 pm #364923
Parks and Recreation – The pilot and first season were okay, but after watching the rest of the series I am so grateful the show survived its first season. Season 1 is just dramatically worse than the rest of the show, with the slight exception of the Season 1 finale.
The Office – The pilot was so boring to me it took me four tries before I ended up continuing on.November 12, 2015 at 8:30 pm #364924
The Fall. It was so boooring, and Gillian Anderson didn’t make it any better for me.November 12, 2015 at 8:34 pm #364925
Add 30 Rock, Mom, House of Cards, Southland, Shameless, and Penny Dreadful.November 12, 2015 at 8:53 pm #364926
I LOOOOVE “Louie,” but I hated the first episode. Normally I would have given up on the spot, but I had heard good things about episode two, “Poker/Divorce,” so I watched it and it was a masterpiece. I was fully on-board at that point.November 13, 2015 at 4:37 am #364927
American Horror Story, Downton Abbey and The White Queen and Penny Dreadful oh i forgot Salem..also boring still watching it and now i hooked..love itNovember 13, 2015 at 7:55 am #364928
Wow. A lot of “Parks and Recs” mentions – which is strange to hear there was any dislike for it from any derbyites as it always seems to sweep the GD TV awards. Also makes me want to check the show out as I am someone who, after the first few episodes of S1, decided to give up on it.
Great stuff.November 13, 2015 at 11:21 am #364929
Definitely Parks and Rec and 30 Rock. Very rocky starts, that got their grooves in the 2nd season and beyond.
TBH, Breaking Bad didn’t hook me in the pilot. It actually took me a few episodes to love it.
